Morris Melani of Alaska Arms is making Quick Detachable rings for the CZ 550 rifles. He sent me a pair to look at and try out. As far as I know Warne and Talley are the only others making QD rings for the CZ actions with the notched rear receiver. I have not used Talley QD rings for the CZ’s but have used Warne QD rings for the CZ’s without any issues and they appear well made. I tried the AA rings on a CZ 550 in 416 Rem. Mag. and fired several shots at the range using a Leupold 2-7X scope. I needed to tighten down very snugly the hex screws on the rings to prevent the scope from slipping during firing the rounds. It might be a good idea to thoroughly clean the screw threads and take the Allen wrench included with each set of rings to the range when sighting in the rifle. I think some friction paper has been added to the inside of the rings to help prevent slippage. A nice feature of the rings is that they only require a quarter turn of the levers to release the ring bases from the grooves in the CZ receiver. The lever of the rear ring lever must be on the left side of the receiver as the plate with the tab fits in the CZ recoil cut in the receiver is held by the lever side of the ring. For right-hand actions, the levers are out of the way to make room for easier loading/reloading. The rings appear to be well-made and represent an alternative to other suppliers of QD rings for the CZ 550 actions. It is my understanding that the rings are available from both CZ and Brownells. They are available for 1” and 30mm diameter scopes in Low, Medium, and High heights. To spread the good word, Morris supplied me with another pair of Medium Height rings and a pair of High Height rings to give away to AR members. Both sets are new in “In the Box.” I’ll post the rules in the Contest Forum here on AR. Just report back here how you like them of you could. Here are some pics of the new rings on the Leupold 2-7X scope in Medium Height: ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. I believe Morris modeled these rings after tom burgess q.d. rings....? Best, Dave

I met Morris at the SCI show and picked up a set of the "low" rings there. They are very well made and "svelte"; not alot of bulk. The quarter turn levers are a good idea. The "low" rings may turn out to be too low though. The Talley's are what you would call a medium height, and we are running into more and more scopes with huge rear bells that don't clear the bolt handle. The only constructive criticism that I have with the rings is the recoil dogleg on the rings is built into the moving clamp under the lever that tightens to the dovetail. It doesn't seem as strong a setup as the solid dogled like the Talley's and Warne's have, but it may not be an issue. Only time and use will tell.

I wonder if the 1/4 turn may turn out to be a pain more than a benefit in that it would only take 1/4 turn to completely un-clamp either end of the scope, perhaps at the wrong time. I wish I had a CZ, I'd buy a set and give 'em what fer. They do look very nice, if he decides to make rings for a Model 70 we will do business for sure.
