Brad aka Pill Shooter416 Weatherby to 460 Weatherby Brass
To the group:
I recently picked up a 460 Weatherby rifle and I have about 60+ round of factory 416 weatherby ammo. After pricing the cost of 460 brass I was wondering if I could just pull the bullets and run the 416 brass well lubed into the 460 dies? If someone has done it before please give me some advice.
Thanks Brad

GeorgeSI have sized new .375H&H brass up to .470 Capstick (.375"-.400", .400"-.416", .416"-.458", .458-.474") then fire-formed.
I never lost a case.
Do it in steps and use a good lube (I use Imperial Sizing Die Wax).

RobgunbuilderYes it works, use Imperial sizing wax. No problems.-Rob

Brad aka Pill ShooterThanks guys. I do have some imperial sizing wax on hand. I was just wondering if that was too big of a step up with one pass. I don't have anything on hand between .416 and .458. That Weatherby brass is just darn expensive. Not as much as 500 Jeffery but still. Rob BTW I thank you or blame you for this Weatherby purchase. I had to just try one on for myself. I read you comments on a previous post. I hope I don't get blown up but if I do oh well my wife can finally sell all my guns and get herself a new car.

GeorgeSUse a tapered expander and put mica powder inside the case mouth.

Brad aka Pill ShooterTapered expander? Help me here do they come standard with a particular brand of dies or do I need to order a seperate die. I don't think that I've really looked that closely at the expander in my various die sets. My Bad.

GeorgeSIt can be a tapered expander ball on the sizing die stem like this
or an expander die this
instead of this
I bought my dies from CH4D, and they included the expander dies.

RobgunbuilderA tapered expander is great if you can find one. I don't think its necessary for the .416 to .458 expansion. However, if you do have problems, take a case add a primer and fireform with bulleseye powder ( no cornmeal or wax will be necessary. starting with 20 gr of bulleseye hold the gun with the muzzle in the air and fire it. Out should pop a perfect .460 case. You may need a little more bulleseye but this technique works fine. -Rob

Brad aka Pill ShooterJust got off the phone with CH4D. Here's the plan 1 -expander body and two expander dies. 40-44 and then 42-45. This is what they had in stock. The nice lady on the phone suggested that I do it in 2 steps to minimize the possibility of brass damage. I'm fine so for about $50 I can open those cases up without getting my neighbors mad with my fire forming. I'll report back once it give it a try. The other benefit is I can use my supply of 416 Rigby brass to make a 450 Rigby brass some day if I decide to go that route.
Thanks Again
Brad
