Guys, I am considering the purchase of a Remington 700 safari (fairly priced, and available in left-hand...). The 416 RM seems a good option but what if I want something bigger? I am just wondering about the feasibility of chambering a Remington 700 in 458 win to 458 lott. Does anybody know if it can be done with this rifle (magazine and bolt lengths)?

Mandrill (sorry, just a play on your handle) were it me, I would either keep it in 416 rem, or look at the BIG stuff. You can do a 458 lott, and it should feed with just a rebarrel, can do a 470 capstick, and it will feed with no problem, or you can go totally wild and do a 500 a2, 510 wells, 500 jeff, 505 (with.510 barrel) giggs, or 585 nyati. Have you shot it in 416 yet? You will have to go to the Lott to even gain any real power over the 416. If the '16 shoots, keep it. It's now tied for my favorite kicking around rifle here in texas. The other is a cute little mexican mauser in 358 I like to carry. If you want a lesser, but more interesting change, have it redone for 416 dakota. It would be a rechamber (setback, too), bolt open, feedrails, etc, but not the exspense of a rebarrel good hunting jeffe

There are currently Winchester Model 70 .375 H&H guns in LEFT HAND available from distributors! I know; I bought one a few months ago. Winchester doesn't make the big ones very often in left hand, but they did a batch earlier this year. If are are going to do a rebarrel, consider going with one of them. They are CRF, after all. And for all the complaints from others, mine shoots fine out of the box. Pertinax

Thanks for your quick answers, friends. Jesse, in fact I would like real big stuff (I am 1.90 m / 100 kg and think I can handle the recoil), and I know Weatherby can build me a left-hand 460, it would be a very dependable rifle but more than twice the price of the Remington. What do you think can be the biggest caliber you can get in a Remington 700? Of course I know the 416 rem will kill anything on earth and I do not need more power for my 1st DGR, it's just a matter of 'intellectual pleasure' .

Mandrill, oh, sorry you hear you are a little chap. I'm 2m, and about 110k (hech, and reallY).. and size don't mean much for eating up recoil. I think it's more mental than anything, when you get to the various 458's and down. put a mercury tube in the 416, and it'll fell like a 22. I would say the capstick is the "biggest" you can do without e$$pe$$ive mods. cheers jeffe

King Baboon, I think you'll never have problem to re-chamber a M700 into .450 Ackley full lenght of .375 H&H, the action of this rifle is long enough to do the job. In term of energy the .450 Ackley is 5947 ft.lbs is 100 ft.lbs more thna .458 Lott with the same bullet weight. As you are a big guy and left handed guy you'll love it. I have done same thing with a CZ550 458 Mag re-chamberred in .450 Ackley mag.

The 458 win mag to 458 lott conversion in a rem 700 is the easiest conversion out there. Be sure to have a 2nd recoil lug installed in the barrel and bedded in the stock. Be sure to have the stock relieved around the tang. Get a better recoil pad, and blast away!
