I just want to publicly thank Canuck for taking me out and letting me shoot his 470 MBOGO. What a blast (pun intended) We shot some water jugs that looked like they had been hit by a missle. The best was the 5 gal jug sitting on a metal stool. It exploded and the surprise was the 3/16 metal plate of the stool was bent about 3/4 of an inch from the force of the water pushing down on it. Canuck has a photo of it that he might be kind enuf to post. Quite impressive to say the least. The Gun is a pleasure to shoot and puts a grin on ya from ear to ear. I don't think I would shoot 25 in a row like I do with the 375 H&H but I sure would like to try.

Canuck is such a great host with lots of stories. I got the long version of the sheep hunt but we ran out of time just as he says the grizzly bear hunt is even better. I think if we ask really nice on those long days of winter we could get a real BEAR story out of him. Thanks again Canuck. Smokey

My pleasure, Smokey. I am glad we managed to coordinate our schedules better this time. Its always fun introducing someone to the 470 Mbogo...and one of the best excuses going to get out to the range and burn some powder!

Here are a couple pics for ya...

This is a frame from the video clip, with 5 gallons of water in the air:

And here is some of the aftermath...

You should check out www.470Mbogo.com for the story of Dave's cartridge, an article he wrote comparing some big bores, and some more video clips that he and I have put together.

Best of luck with the elk this week!!

Cheers,

Canuck

I'd seen them before, and they were just as entertaining as the first time! I must admit, you guys *do* make shooting a big gun look like it doesn't hurt at all...

Frans, Dave can take all the credit for that. The 470's he has built (of which mine is one) are a pleasure to shoot. Stock design, distribution of weight, etc, are a big part of it.

Smokey can probably attest to that as well. I know he has shot some other big bores in the past so he can compare. He handled the 500gr bullet at 2500fps just like a pro.

Cheers,
Canuck

Dave, Smokey happened to be in town for an elk hunt and asked if I had time to let him take the 470 out for a spin. Fortunately, I had just managed to get some loads made up with your dies (I am still struggling with those CH4D dies).

BTW, I should be finished up with your dies in time to get them Loomised out on Monday.

Have you had any luck with the brass/Swifts?

Cheers,

Canuck

Canuck,
I have 1 set of CH4D dies in .257TCU, and after resizing a case you can drop the bullet in the case by hand. They claim that they can make any caliber if you give them the specs but, I was not impressed. I should have spent a little more and had Redding make a set that actually work.

Timberghost,

Thats pretty much the same problem I am having. I have insufficient neck tension to hold a bullet in place. Its partly due to the neck wall thickness being only 0.010" on the brass I have, and partly due to the dimensions of the die. The die was supposed to be set up for 0.010" wall thickness, but it definitely wasn't.

I don't know if I can get brass that is any thicker?

I am still hoping CH4D will help me out with this...

Cheers,
Canuck

Frans,

A properly stocked big bore, properly fitted to the shooter, and properly held by same shooter SHOULD NEVER HURT to shoot! Violently thrash one about, yes, hurt NO!

Looked like great fun. These rifles do similar things to animal's chest cavities, too!

Canuck,
Don't hold your breath on any help from CH4D. I was using new .223 Rem brass for my .257TCU and all I got from CH4D was some line about how they only made 1 run of these dies and that was 7 years ago before he kept records in his system. Nice excuse for CRAP DIES, but it didn't help me out a bit, as he wouldn't stand behind the dies. He also blamed the "dimentional confusion" of the neck diameter on Thompson/Center, who has always stood 100% behind their products in my vast experience with them.
CH4D offered to try again for another fee, but I ate my loss and went to Redding for a good set. The Reddings work!

CH4D...Just "helping you advertize" like I said I would!!!
