I ended up with a couple boxes of 500 Jeffery loaded cartridges and cases.

In time I will convert a commercial Mauser 1898 to use them.

What is the best way to get the rifle up to 11.25#, empty?

1. Fat barrel, laminated stock with about six cross bolts, and lead or mercury tubes in the stock until balance is achieved?

2. Pretty fat barrel on a McMillan Sako Classic Hunter style with either a 416 magnum fill, or even a sniper fill?

3. Pretty fat to fat barrel on the densest and straightest (with a little down curve through the wrist) black walnut stock with about seven cross bolts (I guess I only need four cross bolts if I use 9/16" diameter threaded rod that is through hardened, and then well tempered.

4. Have one of those shotgun geniuses put in a butt pad on top of a plate that has three heavy duty progressive chrome silicon coil springs. Those devices are for 16 yard handicap trap shooters, and live pigeon shooters.

BTW, the rifle that is chosen will get a bushed, .o62" firing pin, shallow "V" sights, and will retain the original flag safety.

I would love to hear from anyone who has had the pleasure of owning and shooting one of these (overgrown) puppies.

really, it will have a barrel like a sewerpipe..

but, sure.. a pacnor barrel, 23" have the muzzle be slight larger than the largest NECG front banded sight you can find

MUST have a 3rd lug on the barrel

should be screwed down, like the CZ 550...

reinforce the wrist with a pin...

weight and balance it

My 77rsm in 500 jeffery is without a doubt my favorite express rifle. I doubt I will ever hunt africa and I really don't think I will ever need 10 feet of penetration of an entire elephant. If I do need that kind of performance I'll break out my stash of black tip 50 cal. slugs and reload a few.
In all seriousness tho it all boils down to what blows youre dress up.
For me shooting the heavy cast boolits are 90% of the fun.
Some say the flatnose slugs won't feed well but my rifle doesn't seem to care. I'm loading 2 down and 1 in the chamber.

So, 9.5 to 10# empty, that makes it all easier to build.

This 425WR has a heavy profile barrel that makes it well balanced and pleasant to shoot so a heavy barrel for a 500 wouldn't hurt.

Use a nice dense chunk of desert ironwood for the stock!

We all have different recoil tolerances and it seems tolerance for carrying rifles with some weight to them. I personally find it easier to carry an extra two pounds of rifle than an extra 10 lbs on my gut (and I still need to lose 15 more to get back to high school weight). My CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery weighs exactly 11.25 lbs empty (without scope, mounts, sling or ammo) and I wouldn't have it an ounce lighter. It has two mercury recoil reducers in the stock and balances at the mid point of the magazine which is exactly where I like it.

Does your rifle have a stack or staggered magazine?

Mine has the staggered magazine. It took 3 trips to 3 different gunsmiths to get it to feed and extract perfectly, but it's there now.
