BBH,

Teddy used a H&H Royal .500/450 NE (non-ejector, if I remember correctly) which was donated to him for purposes of his safari by a number of well-known big-game hunters and authors of the time. He also had the .405, a 12-gauge Fox (I'm typing from memory here...) as well as a Springfield .30-03 (according to Craig Boddington).

His son Kermit used a .450 NE boxlock by Rigby and a .30-40 Krag, amongst others.

This is about as far as my memory can carry me, I'm afraid. Why don't you get your hands on a copy of TR's book? Should be more detail in there.

Jim Corbett used a .275 Rigby, .450/400 3-inch Nitro, a .577/450 Martini-Henry as well as .500 double (probably a .500 BPE) during various stages of his career. Probably others as well, but I only have one of his books - "Maneaters of Kumaon".

I recall reading one of his books and one of the weapons I recall was a 12ga Paradox. Also a 303 I think.

I believe TR's book was called African trails...

As I recall, TR used his 405 quite extensively, esp. on lion, but used the H&H double for elephant, rhino... might have been something about using them on hippo as well. I can't remember anything about buff.

Kermit, his son, used his 405 almost exclusively, do to shoulder sensitivity.

They had the lever-actions custom stocked to them -- which probably helped w. the recoil, and , by the end of that trip, probably more experience shooting African game than any living hunter.
