It looked like that poodle was well trained. Si needs to get it trimmed up, a working dog does not need the rock star haircut. Big Grin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poodle says they were from Germany and called a Pudelhund (which relates to puddle and means to splash about) and Hund for dog. But I didn't know that before looking. :P

And they were US WAR DOGS in WWII as well .... who woulda thunk it.

Gotta admit, when I look at those French ones with the rockstar cut, they LOOK useless.

About 25 years ago I had a Golden Retriever that I was exercising him by throwing a dummy off my dock for him to retrieve. The neighbor had a chocolate colored standard poodle. He would always brag how poodles were the greatest water retrievers and could out swim my golden.

To me the only thing that his poodle was good at was running up and down the fence line barking like a idiot.

I told him the best way to find out how great his poodle was to have a little contest and throw the retrieving dummy and see who's dog got it first. Well I gave it a good throw my dog held up until I commanded him to go, the poodle ran like crazy jumped off the dock and went to the bottom in 8' of water not even trying to swim. We had to jump in a rescue the poodle before it drowned.

After that when ever that poodle would start barking and running up and down the fence line. I would throw the retrieving dummy at the fence near him and he would run in the house with his stub of a tail with a puff ball on the end between his legs.

Standard Poodles are good water dogs, especially in cold weather, they have wool instead of fur. My sons dogs are very good swimmers, and fast runners, they could turn a average person into $.79 a pound hamburger in guard dog mode.

I trained two. One did not work out well at all. I got it at 6 months of age. It had been raised on a farm and was afraid of every thing. Once I got it obedience trained I traded it for a very expensive Italian suite. The otherone I got as a pup from a back yard breeder. He worked real well, good eyes, liked the water and loved birds.

The only problem was that coat and Louisiana gumbo. You just could not get it all out after a hunt. I tried spraying the dog down with Afro- sheen, the mud would just wash out.

You just could not put the dog on your truck seat because you would get a cherry scented oil stain. Every time I used the stuff he lost 2 IQ points.

In about two years I had to stop using the Afro- sheen, He got as dumb as most labs.

Many poodles today are bred to be pets, show dogs, etc. Originally they were retrievers, hunting dogs, some still have that instinct:
