What does your .458 weigh?
Am putting together the stock of the "practical build" .458 AR.

So far we have 9.5+ pounds with no weight in the butt and a little room left for lead shot in the forearm.

Was wondering what kind of weight you fellas have built to in the .458 calibers.

I think it is perfect at 9.5 to 10 pounds. If it is balanced, now, stop now. thumb If not balanced the way you like, add the minimum lead fore or aft to balance.

SIGARMS Mauser 98 Magnum 450 Dakota: 9.5 pounds
CZ 550 Magnum .458 WinMag rechambered to .458 Lott (hogback/Lux): 9.75 pounds
Ruger RSM .458 Lott: 10.0 pounds
Whitworth Mark X .458 WinMag: 8.5 pounds

Those are some standard factory weights of specimens I have weighed.

And a Whitworth Mark X rechambered to .458 Lott and placed in a Brown Precision fiberglass stock with a lot of epoxy and steel cross bolts and pillars: 8.0 pounds (minus the KDF muzzle brake) Smiler

Desirable is no more than 10 pounds bare/empty weight, IMHO.

My Whitworth is 9# and change, and my oldass Ruger tang-safety is close to 10#. I think 9.5#-10.25# is in the ideal range.

I have never weighed mine but guess it is around 8 to 8 1/2 pounds. Recoil last only a fraction of a second but gravity is forever.

LOL Phil! Well said! My CZ .458 Lott weighed 9 1/2 lbs and my Mark X in .458 win mag weighs in right around 8 1/2 lbs. Obviously neither are or were scoped.

my 458 AR - 8.5 or so, 458 winmag, 8.25, unscoped, both...

anything from 8 to 10 will work, as you can train for EITHER the extra weight or the extra recoil.

I just delivered a Lott to a customer who had me convert it from a Win Mag. He wanted the lightest gun I could make. It has a 20" barrel and a plastic stock and weighs without scope right at a tad over 7 pounds.

Jeffe,

He told me that on his first trip to Africa he set the grass on fire with it. I told him he'd be able to light up trees on his next trip now that it's a Lott!

Customer's always right...I guess.

Thanks Guys ... looks like mine will not be out of line. It came in at 9 pounds 12 oz with the recoil transfer bar epoxied into the foreend along with some #11 shot and a 2.5x Leupold scope and mounts. Balance is slightly nose heavy.

Now it has to go to be blued before final bedding. So far so good.

Again, thanks!

My Lott, with a 24-inch heavy contoured barrel, weighs 11.3 lbs. and I like it that way.

But I like my big bores with long, heavy barrels and I like them to carry some weight.

Got a Browning Safari (first year production, I think) that has a pencil thin barrel and weighs 7 lbs. bare.

The 405 gr. loads seem to rock my world, but the recoil with the 500 gr. is more push than punch. Which makes me wonder why I loaded up a bunch of 405 gr. "practice" loads last night. bewildered

Mike,

My 458AR weighs in somewhere in the 9 to 9.5lb ballpark. With full loads it can get a little animated from the bench but nothing beyond what you would expect. I find it very comfortable and I think Jeffe will agree. I think you will be happy where it is at.

BTW, my RSM weighs 10.9# with tungsten rods fore and aft.

Just enough to let you know you're alive! F**k it!!! My 416 Rigby for being nostalgic! My next weapon, is going to be a shoulder slayer! For too long I've sat by and watched others "belch fire and hitting power"!! I've officially snapped!!!! I want a bigger bore!! ( although my 416 Rigby isn't done yet) What the hell! Rationallity is for the weak!! GO BIG or shove your nuts back up and go through life being a boy! Life is for those who grab the "Brass Ring" or how do the marines say "Those who dare Win"!!

My M70 LH Lott with 24" Krieger barrel weighs 10.5 loaded, 1.5 x 5 Leupold and mercury recoil absorber in stock. It balances nicely and is not bad at all offhand. It's sister, a M70 375 withou recoil absorber, weighs 10.0 a balances the same due to different barrels. With your eyes closed you can't tell which rifle you're holding.

.366 Torque,

you can go really big, really cheap with a CZ in 416 Rigby, and easy too. It's just a rebarrel and a bit of feeding fussing away from a 470 M'bogo or a 510KX...aka 416/510 Rigby. That's one of the prime virtues of the CZ magnum actions, the platform is great for building B-I-G bores on.
BTW, my Whitworth weighed 8lbs 10oz before the scope and recoil reducer. Made it a fun gun to shoot.

off to the range

At last someone had the decency to ask about my .458WM. It weighs 8 lb 14 oz empty. That's why I like to shoot it 4up. Brings it to 9lbs 5oz. Nice to shoot standing, benchrest though, the effects of recoil last a little more than a fraction of a second. More like 2 or 3. Big Grin
