Was looking at a pre-'64 70 .375 H&H today at a gun show. I know the fellow that has the gun. So I can go see the gun again if need be. The gun is what I'd call "plain Jane" really. It's no pig. But it's not a cherry, either. It's got a straight-grained stock (not factory) that needs checkering. The action & barrel are matted with a Parkerized type finish. It's got a 3-leaf rear and banded front sight. I'm guessing I could get the gun for around $1500. I'm really just looking at it as a donor for a Capstick. Worth it?? Founder....the OTPG

unless you just have to have a pre-64 m70 action for your project, it's expensive for me...the newer crf actions can be found for lots less than that... i picked up a NIB .300 rum stainless crf m70 for less than $600...as winchester ain't making them anymore and problbaly never will, i figure it's value to be close to double what i paid...for the $1500 you're atarting out with, you could do a lot of work to a p-17, p-14, 1909 arg or several others, and still make a classic rifle... go big or go home ........ Considering that post-'96 "pre-'64-type" rifle are available for less than $1000, why would you pay $1500 for one? George

The way you discribe the gun I would say "oink". With so many things having been done to it I would question if it had any value. IMO. Dr.C At Home on the Range-Texas Panhandle

with a replacement stock and a refinish, you are looking at buying an action and an ugly test stock. Waaaay too much, by about half. That kind of $$$ will buy a new model CRF in the 470 Capstick. Kimber had the Caprivi at the SHOT Show in 458 Lott, and the money you will have in this one could probably talk them into doing a Capstick for you for about $3200. I would have to see it, its had a lot done to it and it is a pre 64 and I prefer that action to any newer one...but it sounds like a $800 to me..the stock is probably valueless IMO.. A fairly nice pretty much original pre 64 Win. can be had for $1500 if you shop around and don't get TOO picky..An original one can be picked up for about $2200 average...
