My.458 causes a bloody nose. So just reload and keep shooting.

I had a Weatherby o/u 12 ga that doubled on me shooting heavy pigeon loads it was quite manageable yet certainly noticeable. Send it back to Weatherby where it was repaired. Some time after it's return it happened again. Back to Weatherby this time they'd would not fix it, big mistake. I now own a sporting goods store and new miss the chance to beat up on Weatherby.

I had a 500NE double on me...at 5'6" and 155 lbs..."brisk" to say the very least! i have it on video and i am glad i can laugh at myselk...

Some of these comments are intersting. I once bought a jazzed up Merkel 470 from Cabelas. I pulled the trigger 4 times. It shot 8 rounds. From these posts, it seems like this is not an isolated occurrence.

Just this past weekend, My 500 NE VC doubled when pulling the back trigger first. While it was not something I wanted to do and hope to never do again, it was not as bad as I would have thought.

I once had a Heym 500 NE that I could not shoot. I would double that VC 500 NE all day long rather than shoot the Heym once. It was BAD! Dislocated my middle finger after the first shot. My forearm turned black. Not fun. My kid did double that rifle. He has never shot a double again.

the only gun i doubled was a 577 nitro a few years back recoil was a bit stiff but not that bad.

Honestly, the fear of an accidental doubling of my 12gaFh double rifle has kept me from finishing the Damn thing. Two of those rounds going off simultaneously could result in a crippling experience. Everything is done and it's been test fired on the bench, but at some point my survival instinct kicked in and I've never finished it.just needs soldering the ribs to the barrels. Two 1000gr bullets at 2200 fps each would be really pretty stout recoil. We are definitely talking hospital time.obvioudly I could down load but that would defeat the objective.

Tell me if i'm wrong...but 2 Hornady 500NEs generate about 11,700 lbs of muzzle energy. like others on this topic, i found the recoil to be strong but surprisingly tolerable...no broken nose, no bruised shoulder. i think if opportunity ever presents itself for me to try out a T-Rex at 10,000+ lbs, i won't pass it up...maybe!

When the rifle doubles you get four times the energy of one round (see above).

I wonder what 1600 ft pounds of recoil feels like. Maybe like being run over by a Honda Civic. No thanks! 200 ft lbs is all I can handle.-Rob

I have seen this happen on a few occasions.

Apart from the horrendous recoil, no damage has ever occurred.

A friend of mine managed to double my 470. It was fun to watch, and apparently it hurt a bit, and gave him a headache, but there was no damage.

Most doubling is the result of strumming, with the trigger finger slipping off the front trigger and hitting the back trigger, which is not a simultaneous firing, but a quick one, two punch.

My question is why on Earth would anyone put a finger on each trigger at the same time? The human hand has only one trigger finger the fore-finger!

This is a video of a new .577 Nitro Express rifle that a client had just used successfully in Canada on a bear hunt. When they were all through hunting the guys with him all wanted to try out his new gun. He warned them all that they should only fire the front trigger first because it was set lighter than the rear. The video shows the last man to try it out, and he puts two fingers in the gun and promptly double discharged it. You can see that he almost completely looses control of the gun and it weighs 12 1/2 pounds. Luckily the gun was not hurt but I can't say the same for the shooter. Bob
