How does Cogswell Harrison stack up quality wise among British double rifles. I have the chance to buy one in 450-400 3 1/4. any info appreciated. It is a beautiful little rifle, about 8lbs

My first double rifle was a 450/400 C&H. I got (I Think) 5 rounds with it. When I shot them up that was it. Could find none anywhere. This was in 1951. The hardware stores didn't even know where to order them at that time. No internet and Stoeger didn't have any. It wasn't a best grade gun but I thought it was the greatest in the world. It's the only C&H I have actually ever seen. It certainly filled a teenagers dreams of the time.

C&H built countless doubles and I've seen and handled many. Excellent quality--pure English.

I have handled numerous SXS "Goggys" in 12b,16b and 20b if the rifles are anything like their shotguns you will enjoy the craftmanship.

If it only weighs 8 pounds, are you sure it was not made as a 450/400 3 1/4" BLACK POWDER EXPRESS???

I would look carefully at the proof marks, to see if it was originaly a BPE,and might have been reprofed for Cordite at a later date.

The rifle is most likely a black powder proffed one, given that weight. Look at the flats of the barrel and see what weight bullet it is proofed for & if it is 55 gr or 60gr of Cordite? Edited: Sorry that does not make sense.

If the price it right, it would still be great rifle for deer & pigs using Notro for black loads with lighter bullets. All the info is available in Graeme Wright's great book.

Thanks for the info. One of us alerted me to a possible problem of barrel regulation with the gun I was looking at. I thank him very much. Saved me a lot of trouble. George
