Couple of sight questions for you boys that have big bore ruger no. 1s. I'm thinking when its time to set the combination up, it will be a 1x5 leupold scope, with warne QD rings. However, what I was thinking, instead of using the existing irons, changing the front to a 3/32" ivory bead, and instead of putting an express rear site on, mounting a NECG receiver site in the rear. Once sited in, it can be removed and add the scope and vice versa. The reason I'm thinking about itis my age/bi focals. What do you think? Mad Dog

MD, I've only owned a couple of No 1's but your idea about the NECG sight is sound. Replacing the Ruger sights is a great idea anyway as they are crap. This essentailly is what I have on a M70 with quick detach Talleys and a receiver sight that fits the rear scope base. I also have bifocals and find the ghost ring perfect but I use a fiber optic front sight. Mark MARK H. Mad Dog, Excellent setup. Just slide the rear sight insert out by loosening the hex screws (Hawkeye or Boddinton No.1), or fold down standard No.1. The front sight on the Ruger is a bright white 3/32" bead already, from factory (at least on the Hawkeyes, .375&.416, and Boddington No.1s). Get one of those if you don't have it. The only reason to switch to "ivory" would be for the slightly yellowed bead to use against polar bear. No ... polar bear fur is closer to ivory than bright white. You can leave that 3/32" white bead alone, and just switch to red fiberoptic bead for polar bear. Only problem will be small game at long range in a snow field, with the white bead. It will cover the target and get lost in the snow. The NECG peep for Ruger is the best of the three from NECG that I have (Ruger, Weaver, CZ). They say the CZ can use the Ruger peep with some minor mods.

Definite plus on the front site replacement, pretty easy replacement, just make sure to get the sight height correct. For those that don't know, the standard #1 comes with a brass bead, ick. The boddington's come with the white bead. As for the rear, yes and no. You will have to carry it around with you which can be a PITA. This will depend on what game you will be hunting and at what ranges. A lot of the African hunters carry two scopes in case one goes out. John

yeah, the no. 1 I have has that itty bitty brass bead, so I'm gonna put a white front site on. I said ivory, but I meant white. I think I'll get the iron sites straightened out first, then get the rings/scope a little later. I won't be using the ole girl for hunting, for at least a year, so I got plenty of time to get everything sorted out. Mad Dog
