That's a lot of history. Frank "I don't know what there is about buffalo that frightens me so.....He looks like he hates you personally. He looks like you owe him money." - Robert Ruark, Horn of the Hunter, 1953 NRA Life, SAF Life, CRPA Life, DRSS lite

I think people mistake the value of the tool for the man that used the tool. Ever see a picture of carpenter holding a hammer in front of nice home he built? I just don't get the value people place on a tool used by someone supposedly famous. I prefer to know the person or about the person. The tool is just a tool.... until an expert uses it. No one is out there searching for Michalangelo's paint brushes are they?

Arguably that belongs in a museum as much as back in the field. I do appreciate the history. Regards, Robert ****************************** H4350! It stays crunchy in milk longer!

I bet you could send it back to Winchester and have it refurbished, good as new!

That must have been the same rifle used during the infamous Jack Lott dustup with the buffalo. I was able to handle it at the SCI show and without the historical "value" would say that another rifle in similar condition might be worth the shipping price. So very well said. Next time you hear from the White House on how Broadband is going to save Rural America, and they only need another Billion or two MORE to build it, read the above quote again. Old rancher I worked summers for as a teenager. Claimed: "That's George Washington's axe, same one he cut the cherry tree down with. It's had half dozen new heads and couple dozen new handles but, THAT's the one!!!" It was stuck in the chopping block where everybody split firewood when they got around to it. TO me, it looked like everyone and their cousins used it to chop rocks for the past 100 years. After I bitched about the condition he bought me a new double bit that fit me just perfectly. I have six pieces of gravel from the original grade of the first trans-continental railway. I picked them up along the tracks myself last weekend. If anyone here values and collects historical items I'd be willing to let each piece go for a fair price. .

Provenance has everything to do with values placed on collectibles. But I don't think the condition of that rifle or its particular provenance make it worth $75K. JMHO. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Documentation is everything. If none of the written articles mention and show the Serial # then there is no proof that is indeed the actual Rifle, even thou it may well be.

I almost fell over when I saw the starting price. I will be very surprised if bidding starts that high. I never heard of Wally until I read PHC's book and never heard of him since. Can't be that famous to place such a value on a worn-out piece. I guess WJ's son is trying to make a quick buck on his dad's semi-fame. Nothing lost in trying but soon a disappointment will set in. It would be interesting to sell this piece at RIA or JJ auctions and let bidding determine the actual value. considering the person and his place in history, I would suggest $7,500 a bit high...

Your opinion is the minority. Items with adocumented association to famous figures almost always increases the price/value/desirability. I would imagine having a documented paint brush that belonged to Michalangelo would fetch quite a hefty price. That said, the number of folks that know about and 'appreciate' WJ is rather small, and those with the means and desires for his, ahem, well worn .375 are even fewer. Neat old rifle, but nowhere near 75K 'neat'. Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.
