Here I go against the grain. I recently purchased a 798 in 375 H&H. Side by side with the CZ, it seemed to work smoother and point better for me. The iron sights were better on the CZ, but my eyes aren’t what they used to be, so I am mainly a scope shooter. The much lower price didn’t hurt any either. The 798 was $719. I think this compares well with the old Charles Daly rifles. The lowest price I saw was right at the end from CDNN for $670. With the difference in time and the two crossbolts the price is OK.

Fit is comparable, but not quite as good as a mid 1970’s model 700. The wood is slightly relieved around the rear tang area. My NJ wife, who does not appreciate firearms tradition commented: “that is the prettiest rifle you own, where did it come from?â€

Cleaning the new rifle, the front action screw was very hard to break free. A long Allen wrench was required, a cheater was almost necessary. When it broke free there was a snap, and my reaction was that I will get some easy out (two lies for the price of one) practice. However, the end of the screw/bolt was not shinny. The action had to be slapped out of the stock.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the front crossbolt passes through a metal (aluminum??) bedding block, and the bedding block, recoil lug, and chamber area of the barrel are glass or epoxy bedded. No much work to do here. The lightly oiled action went back in with just a little squirming. Looking at the front screw, I had to pick the bedding material off the threads, it then snugged up nicely. I wish Remington would break it free of the bedding before they send it out.

The rifle cycled a box of Rem. 270gr. RN, reliably a couple of times except when I would go really slowly to watch things. Then a little extra pressure was required to send the cartridge home. The magazine box is a little tight; I see why the 98’s have that little notch in the front ring. The rifle shoots with much lighter recoil than I expected, I have never shot a 375 before

My biggest gripe is the Remington only offers a 60 day warranty on the stock. The loading into the magazine is similar to loading my Rem 700 with bullets seated far out, rear in first, down and back. The CZ’s bigger box would help here.

I’ll shoot it over the few months for accuracy and report back.

Arniet,
Thanks for the report. I have not seen the 375, but have sold a number in 270, 30/06 and 300 Winchester. The stock issue came up with customers after PA's deer season. It was miserable (heavy rain all day) for the first day, which is a holiday in most of PA. I got some negative feedback from guys who experienced the finish peeling around the checkering. Their calls to Remington resulted in quotes of the sixty day guarantee. According to my customer's conversations with Remington customer service, it seems that the laminated stock is a USA addition. The stock finish was the only complaints we had. Otherwise they have been well recieved by the folks who I've sold to. We seldom have them in stock long before they are sold. This does seem to be a decent rifle for the money, not at all like the infamous 710/770's.
