When looking at these two calibres and Rugers option of going for the .458 Lott it sought of confuses me, wouldn't you think they would have legitmised the .450 Rigby and made factory brass for that. It will do what the lott does with elss pressure and has the ability to go harder if you so wish. They also have a .416 Rigby so I thought it would be a no-brainer. The two adavantages before Rugers "legitmisation" are mag capacity & the ability to shoot .458 winnie fodder. But other than that I think it's a poor second to the .450 Rigby. I mean the lott still can not get the magical 2400 fps with a 500 grainer can it ?? In reality is that much more than a .416 Rigby loaded with a woodleigh 450 gr bullet at 2400 fps, which I think would be possible with good brass, considering the .458 lott will get 2300 fps with 500 grains ?? Just to add I am about to start building a .458 lott but my reasons are primarily due to cost, I get the advantages of the factory legitmised round eg; cheap hornady dies and brass and just run a reamer up a cz. But had Ruger legitmised the .450 Rigby that is the way I probably would have went and one day I will build one, right now I wanted a powerful .458 on a budget and for roo's and pigs the .458 Lott should do the job What do you all think

Jeffo, I am definitel building a lot have ordered dies and 150 cases from Grafs. But I just think that for Ruger with there .416 Rigby it would have made more sense for them to legitmise the .450 Rigby

PC, I agree with completely about the Ruger and the Rigby. To me a marriage made in a gun shop. In fact I would like to see Ruger do the whole Rigby routine with a .350, .416 and the .450. Now that would be a matched trio to have. I went ahead and built the .450 instead of the Lott on a Ruger M77 Magnum so it matches my .416. Guess the next project is the .350 on a M77 Magnum action. PC--Since you are trying to do a conversion on a budget, I think maybe you would be better served with regular 458 for the critters now and save the money for when you can go whole hog later on. Whenever anybody tries to do things on a limited budget, corner cutting seems to be the thing to keep from spending too much and you have a conversion that you don't like.

PC, Build the Lott. Then later you will realize that the 45 Lapua is the ultimate, for many reasons. Then you will have to have one of those too. I currently have three .458 Lotts and two 45 Lapuas, so I am a bit ahead of you in this madness, though you are crazier than me in the .585 Nyati department. I have had two 460 Weatherby's come and go, and I keep one .458 WinMag and one .45-70 for old time's sake. The 45 Lapua beat out the 450 Rigby and 450 Dakota in my estimation, for many reasons. Everybody ought to have at least one .458 Lott and 45 Lapua.

475, I have already orpdered and payed for 150 lott cases and a set of dies. I am genuinely happy with the lott as I wanted to be able to utilise 45/70 bullets and have a little more stoke than the winnie, and for that the lott is a good thing. And really it is such a simple conversion, and in my favourite big bore brand CZ you might as well use up a little more length. And although it is a economic decision in some respects I am in know way un happy with the Lott as it is factory legitmised and this makes it "simple" and convenient. My point here is that the .450 Rigby could also have been made simple and convenient by Ruger and Hornady getting together and doing that for the .450 Rigby insetad of the Lott. I suppose it struck me as weird why they did not go that way. Daga eventually I will do as you say and get more .458 rifles may even try a .45 lapua. It will be of course on a cz with a Hogs back stock I just had to add a .458 something to my collection as I had no calibres between my .416 Rigby and .585 Nyati Although I have horse traded my cute little 1894p .44 rem mag to help cover the lott cost, it's sitting beside me now as I type. This will be our last night together before she leaves for a rough pig dogger [ 07-30-2003, 16:15: Message edited by: PC ]

Are you sure its enough for roo,s .Make sure you head shoot only. If its like my 458 (and my yet to be picked up 458 Lott),it will get used mostly on pigs and charging ant hills. At least bullets will be cheaper to get than your .585 .

PC- Roo's and Pigs with a 458 LOTT? Your talking RED MIST from marginal hits! If you guys could drive those toyotas more carefully there would be less wounded game, so I guess your gonna make up for it with a more powerfull rifle!! I understand your wanting something a little less powerful than the NYATI for your drive-by's! But Your a sick sick man! Now a 600 OK with solids is a safe and sane REASONABLE alternative, although brass is a bit harder to come by!-Rob

I use 420 gn cast bullets made by Black River Bullets for playing, they are cheap and can be pushed faster than normal cast bullets(but not full speed). I would like to get a mould for 550-600gn cast bullets.I heard of a bloke making 725gn .458 bullets but havent had any yet.Do you think the 725gn ones would be adequate for rabbits and crows?

Sorry ,I wrote Black River Bullets ,but it should be Hawkesbury River Bullets. The heaviest they make is 420gns and is teflon or moly(I cant remember which but the bullets are black)coated cast bullets.

CR500 Rebel sports has Rem 405gr 45/70 softs for around $40AUS per 100 so there is an option to. But I would like a cheap jacketed 500 gr, I mean the 500 gr Hornady's work out dearer than woodleigh's. Cheaper bullets availble here in Oz for the .416 Rigby with Taipans being $30 per 50.
