In Pierre van der Walt's new book African Dangerous Game Cartridges he lists108 gr IMR 4831 at 2420fps with a 500 gr bullet

I have a 450 Dakota. The Dakota has a bit more case capacity but they are pretty close. I shoot 94 grains of Reloder 15 and a 450 TSX. That load runs exactly at 2400 fps out of the 24 inch barrel of my gun. Hope that helps.

I used 96.5 grs of H4895 with 480 grain Hornady solids and softs of the latest design. I used both Fed 215 and WW Mags and saw no difference. I can't seem to find my chrono records, but as I recall it was between 2350 & 2400 with a 25" barrel. Naturally, use at your own risk. Worked in Africa and shot very well.

+1 for the above H4895 load but with Northfork 500's. It is one of the 'Extreme' powders and less impacted by temperature. I've just gotten a factory crimp die made from Lee as Im not as consistent as I would like with the standard roll crimp. The following site has a good reference for loading the 4-5-0. www.realguns.com/loads/450 Rigby.htm

You will have low pressures and peak accuracy if you use H4350 Extreme.
Start at 100 grains with cup&core 500-grainers or monometal copper or brass 450-grainers.
You will have to find your rifle's sweet spot.
Work up to desired velocity.
Check that Realguns 450 Rigby load table for the H4350 load: thumb
450-grain North Fork Cup Point, 106 grains of H4350, 2523 fps. tu2

H4350 Extreme is a "short cut" powder that meters and trickles well.
It is also about the most temperature insensitive powder you will find.

It has worked well for me in the similar 450 Dakota.
Also both of the 460 Weatherby rifles I loaded for liked 115 grains of H4350 for +2500 fps with any 500-grainers,
and 0.5 MOA for 3 shots at 100 yards with good bullets.

It is bound to be good in the 450 Rigby.

Ron,

The 115 grain load with 500 grainers might be a bit warm in the 450 Rigby. I reckon the 450 Rigby will be a little smaller in case capacity and 460s have .75" freebore from case mouth to rifling. I am guessing the 450 Rigby will be far less.

As a side note I have never seen an accurate 460 fail to shoot like a varmint rifle with 115 grains 4350 and 500 grain Hornady and ditto for 115 grains of Win 760.

Hi Mike,
Good to see you still kicking'.
Thanks for quoting me out of context. Wink
But it did allow you to make the excellent point
about the 460 Wby load. tu2
I did say start low, and pointed out the Realguns
charge of 106 grains with the 450-grain North Fork CPS.
I found H4350 Extreme from Oz excellent in the slightly smaller
450 Dakota also.
Just a generality, H4350 is good in all these big 450s
at appropriate charge.

Good tip on H4350. Got a tad better accuracy from my gun with H4895.One of those things. Used the 'factory crimp die'I had made, very sweet to use. RIP any tips or thoughts on using them ?

Lee Factory crimp dies:
I love them. tu2
I have one for the 450 Dakota, acquired from esteemed Navy Fighter Pilot and ARdotcom member Jorge,
after he gave up on his custom 450 Dakota from the thief custom builder, Heine.
A good crimp on a big bore is always helpful in all regards, IMHO.

RIP thanks for the feedback. Always good to get input based on real world experience than just the sales pitch. +1 on crimping big bores; anything that contributes to consistency and reiablity is a good thing.
