I've found a used custom rifle in a 3" version of the .585 Nyati. The description is that it is the "Gibbs rim version". Is the 3" version simply 0.2" longer in the neck that the 2.8" version or is the shoulder moved forward? Photos in the original article look as if the shoulder is moved forward. Is the "Gibbs rim" the rebated rim or normally what is found in .585 basic brass from Bertram. The gun is said to be built on a standard 98 action and I have a hard time believing that it is the full size rim version. Would standard Nyati dies work, or do they make a set for the the 3" version? Finally, how are are the brass to form? Do I need seperate form/trim dies? Thanks! FFg

The Gibbs rim is 0.640" which is the standard Bertram unformed brass. You will need a separate form/trim die, as well as your standard 3 die set.

I doubt that the 3" version would fit in a model 98, as the 2.8" version gives 3.60" cartridge OAL. Do you have any of the ammo for the gun from its owner, or can you get it? Maybe some whizbang tried to fit the 3" version into a model 98, gave up and wants to sell you the rifle. Be careful.

I have seen a 2.8 inch,.585 Nyati built on a standard M-98 with a Schuler single stack mag. This gun had the rebated.590 Rigby bolt face as the gunsmith did not feel that there would be enough Rim left to control the case with a .640 boltface on a .700 Mauser bolt. This gun was also re-heat treated, by a master gunsmith who really knew what he was doing. Because of the design of the Schuler mag it would feed reliably. I doubt this can be done with a common staggered magazine. The 3 inch case ( the most common varient of which has its shoulder moved out)would result in so little lower bolt lug steel remaining, that I would under no circumstances fire it! Just do the Math! IMHO using anything in an opened -up M-98 beyond a .416 Rigby is pushing it and a Nyati makes a positively dangerous gun unless it was done by a real expert. Run don't hide from this one.
By the way ,I am building a .585, 2.8 inch Nyati right now on a CZ550Mag action and even this was not easy to do! I would not even try on a M-98.-Rob

My friend and I are building .585's on Brno 602's (cz 550 predeccessor) and while the 3" would fit it even the 2.8" is marginal for this action size, if we had the money we would have bought a Granite arms action, we don't so we have to make do. The 2.8" was designed to fit into an M98 action but I struggle to see how the 3" would work if it is marginal in the larger magnum action.

I would steer clear of it and buy a 550 or 602 and have that converted.

Regards PC.
