I haven't seen any posts by Cal in sometime. Does anyone know if he's well? I know he was selling off a bunch of double rifle components this last spring. If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Cal was getting ready to leave for a safari and had all his bags packed and on the porch. He had to have been in a wonderful mood seconds before ... There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

I can think of a hell of a lot worse ways to go than passing with a smile on your face as you are leaving to do something you love. DRSS Kreighoff 470 NE Valmet 412 30/06 & 9.3x74R

Was only thinking of Cal yesterday as I bought some 600N dies and a mold off him and was discussing casting gear with a keen caster at a gunshop. A broad church of knowledge has been lost. RIP Cal. DRSS

Sad news! He bought a Weatherby .22 and scope from me. I'd see him every now and then out at the USSA range. Nice guy! I think he lived with his Mother. We're being hammered with snow. I hope she's OK.

I knew Cal through Accurate Reloading. Over the years he and I bought and sold to each other quite a few times. We all know him as the big bore double rifle guy here on AR. It wasn’t until we became friends on FB that I realized who Cal really was. I am a teacher and Cal had retired(mostly) from teaching after a long career. I was impressed with the unbelievable number of his former students who posted on FB to tell Cal how much he had meant to their young lives. He was one of those teachers who made a positive difference in the lives of a huge number of students. Once word got out that he had passed, the outpouring of love from his former students was unbelievable. Cal was many things, but the positive impact that he had on his students was something special. Oh, and all his students fondly recalled how he would entertain them with stories of his adventures in Africa. We need more teachers like Cal. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

We swapped bullets and brass on a few occasions. He was able to set me up with a few old big bore cartridges for my cartridge collection. I sent him an arrow head display in appreciation much like a framed shadow box cartridge board. And yes his students were extremely fond of him which is fairly rare with the generation he taught. We lost a wealth of knowledge by his passing. RIP Cal If it cant be Grown it has to be Mined! Devoted member of Newmont mining company Underground Mine rescue team.
