I want to try a tang safey on a hunting rifle. My Browing 12 ga has one that I like.
1. Is there any reason not to have a tang saftey ie inherent weakness
2. Are there any bolt guns with a tang satey other than old Rugers and Browings.
3. Can other actions be converted to tang safties
Thanks

I have seen a Remington converted to a tang safety. I looked well done. It looked as if the end of the tang was extended by half an inch or so and the top of the action screw hole had been welded over. So the tang of the action must of had a extension protruding down to give room for the sliding of the safety.

It seems like a relatively easy but time consuming mod. I haven't ever had any desire to add a tang safety to a Rem, but I have added a lot of the swing-style shroud safeties on Remingtons and Mausers. It could be an interesting project. The tang safety is arguably quicker than a swing safety. Thats why you typically see them on shotguns and double rifles.

The thing you need to think about is, a tang safety, in most cases, doesn't block the fireing pin, only the trigger. The Mod 70 safety blocks the fireing pin, and has three positions. The full safety, locks the bolt closed, and also blocks the fireing pin, in the middle position it blocks the fireing pin, but the bolt can be operated to load, and unload the rifle, with the safety on. Then of course, the OFF position frees it all for warfare!

I like the tang safeties, as well, but they are not generally as safe as the Mod 70 type. One rifle that is both CRF, and has not only a tang safety, but a Mauser wing type as well, is the Mannlicher Shoenauer MCA (not the Steyer Mannlicher, which is Push feed). The wing safety blocks the fireing pin, while the tang safety only blocks the trigger. The wing can't be used with a scope mounted, however!

All my Mousers are converted to the after market wing safety, that allows the use with a scope, or to the the Mod 70 type! beer

In the 1950s Anderson Gun Shop in Yakima, WA offered tang safeties for bolt actions and the Savage 99. I had one on an M70. Don't remember the internal details, but it worked fine.
