This one is almost complete. A 458 Lott, M70 Classic action, 23 inch No. 6 Pac Nor Barrel, NECG front banded ramp, Red Fiber Optic sight blade, and the NECG rear peep sight that is made for Ruger bases. The stock is a cheap Fajen oversize classic that I am working down for proper drop and cast off for the iron sights. Then it will be sent as a pattern stock to Mel Smart, Accra Bond, for one of his fine Walnut laminated stocks made from 5 boards cut from a Bastogn blank. Metal needs a dip in the hot caustic tanks for a matte blue. Front ramp and barrel band swivel lug are silver soldered on. Weighs 9-3/4 pounds. Completed stock will have two cross bolts and the barrel will have a recoil lug. I also put a steel trigger guard on the rifle to replace the cheapie aluminum guard.

That red fiber optic bead is highly visible, even with the hood installed. And the bead is easily replacible in the field if damaged or another style is preferred. NECG sights are high quality and very rugged.

Rear bridge has been machined rearward to accomodate the long cartridge. This was originally a 300 Win Mag action. 375 H&H magazine box and follower installed. The NECG rear sight secured with two 8-40 Torx screws. Sight is adjustable for windage and elevation. The sight is mounted on a Talley Ruger style base for the M70, that I remachined the radius to lower the base, shortened it about 1/4", and drilled/counterbored it for no. 8-40 screws All steel and is very rugged. NECG has another rear peep that will be available early in 2002 that is a bit more compact than the sight pictured and it fits Weaver style bases. Both sights have interchangable aperatures with different hole sizes.

Photo is distorted due to the wide angle lens position and my closeness to the rifle when taking the photo. Rear sight ain't that big, just looks weird!!!

Test firing next week.

John, great looking rifle. I have one from the Winchester Custom shop. A couple of problems that developed. First, I had a banded ramp much like yours. The recoil would make it fly off after about the second or third round. Secondly, the cheek piece was far to high to get low enough to use the sights without the rifle bruising my face. The custom shop fixed both problems. You may not run into the same issues that I had. Have fun!

Those problems will not occur with this rifle. The front banded sight ramp and banded swivel lug are silver soldered on with high strength silver solder. There is full contact with the silver solder under the sight band and under the rear extension. You cannot drive it off with a hammer! Plus, if you read closely, you will see that the stock will be properly dimensioned for the iron sights. Ask Don Goldston about Factory M70 big bore rifles and the problems he had with his 416. Biggest problem wiht most factory rifles, custom shop included, is the stocks are "Dual Purpose" for scope and irons. A good stock for a scope will not work for irons and vice-versa. This rifle is "irons only".

We are also thinking of a more compact rear sight, I have a prototype that I am machining that is much smaller than the NECG pictured. Next project: A 416 Rigby on a new CZ550, No. 6 Pac Nor barrel, and NECG sights, this time it's a folding leaf rear sight on the barrel.

John,

Is that the Hackmeister gun? Have you looked at Ashley Outdoors ghost ring rear sights? They are quite compact.

John, you are right. I must have missed that info the first time through. I read it real quickly and went straight to your great pictures! You know how they say "Love is Blind."

John,

That's a nice-looking rifle!

I am interested in a compact and rugged "ghost-ring" aperture rear sight for one of my projects, and I know Ray likes them, so keep us posted on any progress there.

Don

Tell you what - put an Ashley aperture sight on it, make it left-hand, and that's my dream big-bore.

John, if you're at liberty to say, how much might such a rifle cost to have built, including the laminated stock?

Yep, its JJ's rifle. We are looking at several sight options that will be smaller than the NECG pictured. Main reason for the NECG on the rear is to have something to look through while sighting in, and then determining just where that aperture must be on a simple L-shape rear. This one will be sighted in at 50 yards.

Hey - I think I saw that Fajen semi-inlet before. I do hope it has served its intended purpose for you and this project.

Nice looking rifle and workmanship.

John,

Husqvarna once made an excellent rear sight, which was really low and compact. It had the ring on the end of a screw, which was threaded into a dovetail slide. Height was adjusted with turning the ring and windage with putting the slide sidewards. Her is a picture at the bottom o the page: http://hem.bredband.net/b102212/m46.html
It looks like it would be easy machine.

Ive got one on a M98 and I like it much. When I have some time free Ill try to make one for my Brno .22 Hornet.

Best regards,

Fritz

P.S. Your rifle looks great!
