Ruger M77 .458 Lott
Hello all, new to the site and am really enjoying it. i have an opportunity to buy a Ruger M77 .458Lott and 3 boxes of shells for $1000. I am not to familiar with these guns. Is this a good buy. The gun is in excellent shape, no scuffs or dings. Thanks.

If the gun is in good condition, grab it as quickly as you possibly can. The Ruger RSM is a very fine rifle, and the 458 Lott is a great Dangerous Game cartridge. Togther they are an unbeatable combination. I have a Ruger RSM in 458 Lott and I love it. No other production rifle even comes close. Welcome to the forums, and good shooting!

Great gun, great buy. Don't know the biggest rifle you've fired before, but be aware that the 458 Lott genertates a signifigant level of recoil. There are ways to shoot it without beating yourself up, but plopping it on some bags on a bench and shooting it like an -06 is not the way to do it!

The biggest rifle I fired before I got a 458 Lott was a 35 whelen ackley, and I moved up to the 458 with no problems. A past mag recoil shoulder pad and shooting standing was key to success. Also handloading and using 350 gr bullets at 24-2500 fps drops the recoil way down.

Put a better recoil pad on it before you touch it off or you'll hate it!

I have fired 100 rds in mine with factory pad and love the gun. The RSM pad is better than the Ruger norm. Good Deal--Get It

Shoot it a while offhand, then decide whether you want to change it.

Shoot it from the bench first (with shoulder padding), to get a sense of the sights and trigger... then shoot it offhand to get a feel for that. Make sure you mount the gun well... THEN make up your mind.
