I am buying loads for my Safari this summer. I bought 300gr. Swift A frames. I bought Remington Premium factory loads. Do I also need solids as a back up for Buff?. Sprig Rose lipped maidens--light foot lads!!!

I like to have solids for two reasons. First, if you are on a one gun safari you can use the solids on the little plains game and have something mountable if you want a nice full sized trophy. A-Frames on a Steenbok might take out a lot of skin on the exit side. Second, if you have to follow-up on a buffalo a solid will ensure an exit wound and a blood trail on a typical side shot and will allow good penetration if your shooting at the hind end of the animal as he is going away. Most of the buffalo hunters on this forum will probably recommend you use a hard bullet or solid for buffalo on all the shots, some will say a well constructed expansive bullet on the first shot and solids to follow up. There are always North Forks, their reputation is that they do it all very nicely. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Personally I use only flat nose solids or Northfork cup points...I prefer the cup points.. But it depends on where you hunt and what the circumstances are...Some like to use a soft because the hunt in herds as opposed to hunting Bachlor bulls...Herd hunting is tricky in that a solid might actually hit two buffalo..such as in Zimbabwe. I use solids and cup points in Tanzania..I like two holes and lots of blood up waist high so I can look where I am going and see a blood trail at the same time and that takes a solid or cup point or one of Saeeds bullets. I understand that the Northfork solids and cup points have somewhat limited distribution, but Superior Ammo may be able to load them for you.

A good soft nose in the chamber with a magazine full of good solids is the right recipe when after buffalo. If you need a good factory solid, the Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer solid is a great load, too. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Seems to me I noticed Norma factory loads with Barnes solids in the Cabela's catalog. Jeff In the land of the blind, the man with one eye is king.

bullsprig, I'm not a handloader either. I use the Remington factory loads in Swift A-Frames and the Federal Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer solids in my .375 H&H and .416 Rem Mag. I have had very good luck with both of them. The Sledgehammer solids can sometimes be hard to find, so when you find them, buy all that you will need for practice and for your trip. bullsprig: At the SCI convention, Federal announced that they will be loading Barnes TSX and their new banded solids in .375, .416 Rem & Rigby, and .458WM this summer. They may or may not be ready by your hunt. In addition to Superior Ammunition, check out www.safariarms.com John will load these bullets for you at a very competitive price. I have had very good luck with the Remington Swift A Frames in my .375. I have tried they SledgeHammer solids and they shoot very close to the SAF POI at 100 yards. Good luck. RCG
