you double lovers. Been over the pond 10 times.
got my big 5 plus 2 buff and 1 ele. and another leopard.
Shoot my 416 blaser and love it.
Been thinking about a double. I love the pretty ones. I want a single trigger if possible because I shoot a O/U shot gun with a single trigger.

Any ideas about caliber and make

Jeff,

Think you need to explain a bit more about your hunting (or just collecting) intentions going forward. More of the same in Africa - Alaska - rest of US, other??

My own preferences are for a 450/400 or 9.3x74R. Those are easy to shoot, very versatile, and history shows they will stretch upwards to to cover the kinds of DG you have already collected.

I haven't got a recommendation on a single trigger source, but my suggestion is if you are interested in a DR, get at least one SxS shotgun with double triggers and use it enough to get confortable with the double triggers. Fill in some of the blanks and you'll get better advice from some of the real DR experts...

Jeff

I am a Blaser R 93 bolt gun shooter as well.
They are one of the best bolt rifles on the Planet.

I recommend you take a look at a Heym double rifle in 450/400 3" or 450/3 1/4".

You really want two triggers on your DG double...

Another R93 in .375 would make a damned good double. Big Grin

Jeff, I have one of the new Zoli 450/400 O&U rifles and it is a jewel. Mine has double triggers but the rifles have drop lock trigger plate actions and Zoli also makes a single mechanical trigger for those who want a single trigger.
For a little over $9,000 they are a best buy in double rifles

Another vote for the Zoli. They are nice rifles and very easy to care for.

I personally carry a Krieghoff and am very happy with it, and they tell me a single trigger is an option but I haven't tried it.

I Have tried the Zoli single trigger..and while it wouldn't be my choice - I sometimes like to carry a soft and a solid and choose which one to fire first- it is ultra reliable! And if you are used to a shotgun with a single trigger...a very good idea! No risk of doubling the gun, same safety as you are used to on a gun you shoot more regularly...

Jeff:

If you are already shooting a .416, I would take a hard look at a Krieghoff double in .500/.416. It will shoot 410 grain Woodleighs at around 2300-2350 fps and be a perfect compliment to your Blaser .416.

If you already shoot (and love) the Blaser in 416, why not opt for a 500 NE? Since a DR's benefit is with 2 quick shots in a close-range and potentially dangerous situation, I tend to favor the larger calibers in a double.

But...I have yet to drink as much DR Kool-Air as others on this site!!!

I'm with Biebs on this one-- If you have and like a 416 knock a bigger hole! 450/470/500.

Lots of good doubles out there, the V/C guns are very good for the money--and can be ordered with a single trigger. Then there is always Westley Richards and there single trigger! Big Grin

Ed makes a good point about the Verney-Carron doubles. I haven't seen on up close and personal but they have been getting good reviews. Going up in caliber is a good option but bear in mind that a .500 is going to be a substantial step up in recoil too. I don't know what you plan to do with your double but using your .416 as your "heavy" gun and picking up a 9.3X74R as a light double makes some sense too. They are usually less expensive and carry like a dream.

If you like your Blaser R93 as well as I like mine, you may also wish to consider a Blaser S2 double. I have one in .470 and like it very much although it does not handle as well as my K-gun and the Safari model in not available with a single trigger.

When I was thinking about this, since I had a .416 Rigby, I thought the .500/.416 was the perfect compliment. I don't have any experience hunting African game but my reasoning was that if I got the chance, I could use the scope sighted Rigby with a 350 grain TSX/Banded solid for any longish shot and "take over" the .500/.416 in heavy cover or for any follow up. I agree with Ed and Biebs but trust me on this, a 410 grain Woodleigh solid at 2300-2350 fps will probably do anything a visiting hunter needs done and them some but you know that already since you shoot a .416.

Dave, i'd be very leery of you toting a Verney-Carron. Being used to a Blaser S2, and with the VC having a conventional safety, you're likely to push it so hard you'd snap the safety off the VC !!!!

He has 3 of them...2 he had in Dallas. Very nice. I've been tracking a lead on a Marcel Thys 577 for a bit, but the possibility now is getting pretty cold. I'll have to come back to reality one of these days....I HATE when that happens!!!!!

Plus, I have to wait to see if 505ed scores on an Owen 600NE he's negotiating for. You know, I'd then have to keep up with the Texans. Outdone in caliber?....Moi ????
