Heck....My 378 WBY did almost as bad as the 470 Capstick...Although I have never been there I do think the 470 is much better suited to this trype of hunting!

POP,
I read the question as a choice for 'all around' use, where plains game and DG might be hunted.

The .470 Capstick is a bit too much gun for general hunting, hence my vote for the .416 Remington.

Interesting that the Weatherby's garnered a mere 3% COMBINED! Is it the cartridges or the rifles?

1) They're push-feed, which is anathema to some who hunt DG.
2) Their high-velocity can be hell on bullets in thornbush.
3) Their higher, faster recoil can be unpleasant to some shooters, and their muzzlebrakes don't endear them to PHs, either.
4) The Weatherby rounds operate at high pressures, causing some folks to worry about their use in high temperatures.
5) Stock styling might have something to do with it.
6) Ranges are shorter in Africa (except for some shooting in the Kalahari and Kafue Flats), so the extra velocity is unnecessary.

I think the .300Wby and .340Wby are excellent cartridges for Africa, as long as the right bullets are used, and you don't try to take on game that's too big for the round.

If look at a few different sites you will see a core of members who are quite different about calibe/rifle choices at each site.

For example, the favourite question of One Rifle for America is likely to bring in quite a few 338 and 375 H&H answers both on this site and Hunt America. On the other hand a site like HuntChat will not show the 338 and 375 coming up too much. HuntChats main forum is also a general chat forum so the members in general are less likely to be as "guns and ammo" in their thinking as is the case with this site.

24Hourcampfire has a strong core group of members that tend to high velocity small bores in push feed rifles.

Another issue with Weatherbys are the price of rifles/ammo. I think if the poll included Dakota calibres the response would have also been very low, yet they are CRF actions and both their 416 and 450 factory ammo is loaded to low pressure.

I was impressed by the showing made by the 404 Jeffrey in the polls. Are the brass and bullets as available for the 404 Jeffrey as for the 416 Rigby (which while it is not "great" it is at least present here in the USA)?

Are new non-custom rifles available in 404 Jeffrey and if so by who are roughly how much?

Good Luck and Good Hunting,
EKM
