I found a Win model 70 super grade in 416 Rem with a 3x leupold and QR mounts. The rifle also comes with dies and some bullets and brass and I think some loaded ammo. The person selling the rifle wants $1,250. The rifle seems in very good condiction. Is this a fair price? He is selling the rifle because he is not going to hunt Africa again.

That seems to be at the top of the range I might pay. Have you looked up new prices (replacement costs) for the package. That may be a bit difficult...OTOH, a "debugged" rifle for DG at that price is a bargain. Are you looking for a 416 specifically? It sucks that the price gouging will carry on for a while with the winchester. There is a trails end hunter winchester model 94 on gungbroker for $1295.It sold usually for $400 to $440.I found a new 416 rem mag model 70 last week for $969 and passed.I am going to buy a Ruger 77 express rifle if I buy another 416 .I have thought of having a 375 H&H rebored or rebarreled tyo 416 rem mag.I have a 416 rem mag model 70.I like it but I would not pay what they are asking for them.I paid $625 for mine 8 years ago.

Given mod 70 pricing on the rapid rise due to shut down of the factory, and this includes the scope, I would say its not too bad if in nice shape Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum

This is a Super Grade, correct? How is the wood? If is is really nice that could command a premium.

Andy, I thought the super grade guns were worth a little more than the regular safari express to start with. I saw this gun at a gun show and I didn't ask the seller too much about it. The gun was used to take a buff in Zim a few years back so I'm assuming it function's well. I'm in the process of buying a Ruger SM in 375 H&H from a friend who let me use it last year for a buff hunt. Maybe your right about the price on the Winchester. The Ruger I'm buying is in like new shape with a leupold 4X and dies for $1,150. The Ruger retailed for a lot more than the Wim I bet. Thanks Andy for your help.

Assume nothing. That rifle may have worked fine from the factory, or it may be as 'buggy' as a mattress in a hot-sheet motel. Have you shot rifles in this recoil class before? If not, are you willing to put in the time and practice necessary to become proficient with it? If not, get a .375H&H instead. If the .416 is in excellent condition (no cracks in the recoil mortise, no rust, feeding problems, or buggered screws), $1250 is not bad, considering it comes with a scope and QR mounts. Offer him close to what you're willing to pay. If he declines, move on. George
