What is the shortest COL you can achieve with the 505 Gibbs and a Woodleigh 600 PP and the 600 gr Barnes Solid?

The answer is however far back you care to trim the neck. What action are you thinking to use?

Ruger M77 MkII Magnum. The magazine box is only 3.75" long so I am concerned that the Gibbs will not feed from this relatively short magazine. Really don't want to screw around with none standard brass, but thought if the bullets could be re-cannelured and seated deep enough I could get by with a 505 Gibbs with a COL of 3.7" max.

I don't see much of a problem there, a far as length. The 600 Barnes O.L. is 3.850" with the case mouth right up snug to the cannelure wall.
You can easily trim the brass of that ultra-long neck back enough to remedy this and/or bell out the front wall of the magazine box a touch. Just as important, would be the depth and width of the box. I don't know the specs on this box. Was it a Rigby Ruger? Are you looking for just two down, or three?

500 A2

I don't worry about crimping so you shouldn't have to worry about moving the canelure. I have only
ever had one bullet go back in the case a bit under recoil and this had stayed in the magazine all day
while I had fired about 20 rounds. The gun also got bounced around a bit in a vehicle.

Just make sure you use good quality brass that has good neck thicknes.

FYI, the gun being used is an original Magnum Mauser George Gibbs 505 Gibbs.

I would open the magazine and action up in the rear as much as possible, that should have been done to start with along with the rail work I would think...I would also crimp a 505 if I intended to use it on dangerous game...

I will definitely crimp my bullets. This is a hard learned lesson from the 500 A Square!

The magazine box dimensions currently are:
Width at front - 0.998"
Width at rear - 1.071"
Depth at front - 1.950"
Depth at rear - 2.10"
Length - 3.753"

The rifle will easily hold four 500 A Square cartridges in the magazine. I am hoping to be able to fit three 505 in this same magazine. Does this sound feasible?

Yes it does. It's deeper than mine, which takes 3 down. I think you'll be O.K., with maybe a bit of futzing.

for a 3.85 oal, you'll need AT LEAST a 3.90 box.. and this should be taken from the rear.

I've got a ch4d cannelure tool, if you would like to try it... it's a pain in the ASS for anything bigger than .458.

I'll suggest you won't actually gain anything, and have to spend extras bucks on the speciality dies...

but, then again, if *I* did a gibbs, it would be a 505/510.

The guy who used woodleigh bullets that 'came apart' at 2100 fps.

Who knocked two buff down at the shot, right off their feet with lungshots I beleive.

You can call John Ricks and say nice things to him and he'll make you one of these crimping dies. On the left is his die for the .500 A-Square and on the right a standard Lee factory crimper.
No I have not yet purchased one, which I will fix shortly.

Karl, the muzzle velocity was around 2300 fps. Bullets were 570 gr Woodleigh. According to Woodleigh, by the way, these particular bullets are specifically designed for the 500 NE and intended for impact velocities below 2200 fps. Their comments on the pictures I emailed to them was to the effect, that the velocity was too high and I should slow the load down a bit. They also informed me of the bullets design limits. One buffalo shot in the head and the other receiving two slugs in the chest broadside. Neither ran, actually they both dropped where they stood. The second buffalo just to two slugs to put down. These are the only two buffalo I have ever shot. I use Barnes X bullets now. Good day.
