EAW mounts for big bores? Login/Join

Hello

I am looking for some advice about QD mounts for a CZ 416 I own.
There seems to me a lot of good things said about Talley mounts but whilst checking out NECG products I came across the EAW mounts for Bruno CZ rifles. Has anyone used these on a big bore?

As an aside if mounting a Talley QD, do you need to by a base and fix to the CZ before mounting the scope or do they have a QD that attaches straight onto the dove tails on the CZ bridge?

All advice appreciated

Cheers

Stu

The Talley QD's go straight onto the CZ integral base, no extra parts needed.

Talley would be much better than the EAW pivot mounts added on. That would require a lot of extra expense and trouble for naught but snob appeal. German Claw Mounts they are not.

Warne QD are great too, particularly for CZ 550 Magnum.
Safari Kid found a set of the discontinued extra low ones like the ones I have. Medium's from Warne are still available.

Talley's would be only available in medium height also.

RIP thanks for the info, all of my big bore stuff has been with open sights thus far. But I am eyeing off a Leupold VX-III german number 4 with red dot and want to do things right the first time.
I have had the CZ stock altered to allow a good quick bead with open sights, will I have to lift my cheek off the butt to look through a scope with the medium rings or is there not a lot in it?

Cheers

I gave the EAWs a try and was not particularly impressed with their return to zero..My favorite QD and the best at returning to zero by far is the Claw Mounts when properly installed...

Mostly however, I use Talley QD on all my big bores these days. I have the receiver ground and/or bases hand fitted to zero with my scopes adjustments set in the center of the optical plane. That way return is consistant.

Something I have noticed over the years is how many hunters swear their scope returns the rifle to zero everytime, when in fact it does not and others who think if it returns to within 3 inches that is OK...I don't subscribe to this thinking with my DG rifles, I want them to return to dead zero or I will discard that option and just use one or the other.

stuey,
All the VX-III's have ocular bells that will require the medium height Talley or Warne rings at a minimum to be able to function. The only scope from Leupold that you can use with the discontinued low Warne is the 2.5X fixed-power, on the CZ 550 Mag, and that is a tight squeeze for several reasons.

You need some medium Talley or Warne QD's for your CZ. They are both good as it gets for your application unless you want to spend over 1 or 2 K for German Claw mounts.

I doubt the EAW's will be any lower than the Medium Talley or Warne QD, and probably will be higher after you install an EAW base on top of the CZ integral base.

That CZ integral base is already as low as any base can possibly get on the CZ 550 Mag. Don't blow that.

I don't worry about return to zero.
Even with German Claw Mounts, I would re-zero the rifle if the scope was ever removed.
No system in the world can live up to my pinpoint accuracy standards.

With QD's, I just want something rugged that maintains zero, and allows me to get rid of the scope in a hurry. German Claw Mounts are still the best ever for that. Talley and Warne are good too.

Too bad we can't all have 100 rifles with German Claw Mounts. I'll settle for Talley or Warne on a CZ.

Quit obsessing about iron and scope interchangeability. That will never be perfect. If you have your iron sight and stock compatibility, you'll do fine with the medium warne or talley QD's and save over a thousand dollars versus German Claws. And the Warne and Talley are superior to the German Claws in some ways besides economy.

Enough of my hot air for now ...
