Can an individual ship a rifle/shotgun/long gun across state lines to another individual without going thru an FFL? I need to get a shotgun for my personal use from Florida to Dallas. I cannot take it with me as I will be coming from Alaska to Dallas. Thanks, Mike

Yes. You ship it to yourself at their address care of your friend. I've done this a couple of times to make flying easier to a hunting destination. Technically, they cannot open it, only you can legally do that. See answer to item 9 at the ATF website here: http://www.atf.gov/content/fir...-firearms-additional Jeremy

As I read it, you will be in Alaska, the gun is in Florida, and you want to use it in Texas. In the scenario you describe, you would not be the person shipping the firearm. The BATFE's exception referred to above applies only if you are the one shipping the gun to yourself; a proxy may not do it for you. Now, if you were to ship the gun from Florida yourself to yourself (care of a third party) PRIOR to leaving for Alaska, you could do so under the BATFE exception. The person whose care you are sending it to may not open the package; only you would be able to do so without contravening the law. George

Thanks for the info. What service can I use to ship? I know that UPS in Orlando will not ship if there is not an FFL to receive the gun. Thanks Mike

I have always used the US Postal Service. You can only ship long guns this way, no handguns. Put it in a hard gun case, cover it with cardboard, put no markings on it other than the shipping label. Print out the USPS regulations on firearms shipping and take them with you to the post office, just in case you get a fun counter agent. If they put up a stink, ask for their supervisor and show them the regulations. They are not allowed to care what you legally ship. Jeremy

Irreplaceably broke a Lazermark that way. Insurance is a joke -- because it is a gun. Never again!!!!!!!! (It was in a clamshell case, too, wrapped in bubble pack.) _______________________
