Hi Guys: A while back some one used Knyoch Foam Wads for a filler for the 470 NE using RL-15 powder. Where the hell can I buy them and in what gauge? Also give me your best load to regulate a 470 NE Chapuis using 500 grain Woodleigh bullets. I presume Federal 215 primers. I believe I read 87 grains of RL-15, with a filler. I would like at least 2100 FPS. MV Midway USA has the Woodleigh bullets and Graff & Sons has Jamison 470 brass $39.00 box of 20. Thanks... PAHunter I would start with 86gr of RL 15. 87 to 88 gr should be about right. Just be sure what ever filler you use, dacron or foam, is compressed between the bullet and the powder. Also be sure and try the lighter loads I have listed above. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Jim, I use 87.5 grains of RL15 behind a 500 grain bullet with a Kynoch wad and a F215M primer. That is about as close as you can get to the factory Federal loads since they use a proprietary primer. Good advice to start low and build up. Mike

If you don't have Kynoch foam plugs you can use Dacron pillow stuffing. You will like RL-15. Will will get very consistant velocities. Don't forget the 215M or even 215M Bench Rest primers. +1 all of the above statements. The wads can be made by yourself, Rusty makes all of his. If you do buy Kynoch wads they are the #2 size. I can send you a few wads if you would like (PM me) then get a punch and make your own. If you want to buy them you can order direct from Kynoch or get them at Trader Keith's although he was out of them 2 weeks ago. I've used both the 87gr Rl-15 load with Dacron fibre filler with Woodleigh softs and solids as well as 102 gr of H4831 with no filler over brass solids. They both worked beautifully. If I had my choice though I'd go full case with no filler. With that said as long as you avoid any air space in the case, Dacron Fillers work just fine. I have never liked the foam wads though and dont use them.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

I would always try R-15 first in the 470. You will find it is very consistent and most guns shoot it well. My 470 Evans doesn't shoot R-15 well so I use 102grs of IMR 4831. It shoots great but there is a NOTICEABLE increase in recoil. When using R-15 you must you a filler. In my 500/450(same parent case, same specs as a 470) I use 87.5gs of R-15 for 2060fps with Kynoch wads, Fed 215s and Woodleigh 480 gr softs, Hornady 350grs give 2150 with the same charge. With 480 Woodleigh solids I use 85.5 grs of R-15. You can make foam wads out of foam sheets. Use a 50 cal BMG case, sharpen the mouth of the case with a chamfering tool and cut them out. In a half hour watching TV you can make a 100. If you want to buy Kynoch wads call Trader Keith's or call Kynamco directly. Speak with David Little at Kynamco, he's a nice guy and you can order quality snap caps as well. Always start low with your powder charge and always over a chronograph. I'd start with 84grs of R15 and work up from there. If your range can accomodate reloading bring your sized, primed cases and slowly work up 4 loaded rounds at a time fired over the chronograph. Be sure to let the gun cool between loads. There are differences between powder lots so it pays to buy a 5lb canister so it will last.

I use 106 gr IMR 4831 over a Federal 215 with Woodleigh softs. 103 gr under the Woodleigh solids. About 2150fps. I got these loads from Butch Searcy.

I use H-4831 rather than IMR-4831 in my Searcy 470. It is regulated for the 106 grain IMR charge. With H-4831 I get 2,150 fps and tighter groups than with IMR-4831. Also the H-4831 is one of their extreme powders so it is less tmperature sensitive and since it takes a couple more grains of H than IMR powder it fills the case better. With 110 grains of H-4831 it will recoil more than with RL-15 powder but your getting an extra 100 fps velocity which for elephant bulls is a good thing. You won't notice the added recoil in the field on game. 465H&H
