Mark RHornady 300gr HP in a 458?
G'day everyone,
Can someone tell me where they seat these bullets in their 458WM. At the cannulure closest to the base or the one at the front of the bullet? And what velocity do you load these up for pigs, big and small?
Cheers,
Mark.
The 300HP .458 I bought only have one cannulure. Due to these bullets being so short I turned my seating die all the way down. Velocity was around 2400fps.

J.D.RandellYou figure out where the rifling starts in your chamber. Then you set the bullet off the rifling. I'd expect in a .458 WM, you'd seat the bullet longer rather than shorter insofar as most loads for this caliber use a longer, heavier bullet. The short OAL is likely intended for 45/70 Govt.

Mark RI understand to seat bullets to just miss the rifling or to fit mag box but these bullets have, as I stated, two cannulure grooves. The one which would seat the bullets out the furthermost will only have about 3mm (1/8") of the bullet in the case mouth.....
Cheers,
Mark.

N E 450 No2The only Hornady .458 bullet I know of that has 2 crimping grooves is the 325 gr lever evolution bullet.
I would seat and crimp it in the foward most crimp groove, ie closest to the tip of the bullet.

we used the 300gr hornady hp in the 450 marlin... at 2150 or so, the bullet failed, catastrophically .. some might say it over expanded or some other bs, the truth is the bullet detonated ... fragments, nil weight retension..
these had a single groove ... and in no event could that bullet have been loaded to touching the grooves in a 458winmag.. but that's NOT important in a bigbore .. seriously....
iirc, hornady recommends NOT exceeding their max vels in the 458winmang with these bullets

K EvansI tried these in my .458 Lott, seated in the cannulure and loaded to 2760 fps....they shot straight without much recoil but were worthless for anything but shooting snakes in a stock tank...they EXPLODED on contact with just about anything...they would not completely penetrate a one gallon paint can filled with water, would just turn the can into a flat piece of tin with an entrance hole, but the lid and bottom would fly waaaay up into the air.

Sounds like the
PERFECT projectile for use against dangerous mellons, pumpkins and charging water buckets! My nephews will ahve a blast with these in my 450NE! I'll remember to wear rain gear and goggles.
