I recently got 30 800 grain cast bullets for my 600 overkill and love them. They have a huge meplat and two lube grooves. The fellow I got them from does not know the source but I have seen pictures here in the past. Can anyone tell me who made that mold? I would like to buy one as all 30 are gone.

Thanks

Matthew

You could take the measurements off one of the cast bullets that you have then using the design program at Mt. Molds replicate the bullet..

NEI HANDTOOLS, INC makes a 900-gr bullet mold (0.622-inch)and they made me one for 720 grains which I use in a 20-ga TCR-87 slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and brass cases.

Thanks guys, I have a beautiful NEI that casts 2 900's and one 720 each pour but am looking for the 800. I shot them all or I would measure one, oh well. I am pretty well set with the others.

Hi Wayne---I've been building a house so I haven't been able to much fun lately, but will soon again. The flat-nose 800grn feeds a little rough in bolt guns so that's why I made the little 600grn on the end to plink with in the Overkill. I use the flat nose in the sigle shot 600JDJ mostly. Hits like a train Cool

Matthewx,

Glad you got the bullet and hope it will help you. No I don't have the mould but cast a bunch of bullets with it one day. I don't know who it was made by or who owned it but I will try to find out for you. If Veral Smith (LBT) is still making moulds thats who I'd get to make you one. You should be able to send the bullet to any mould maker willing to go that large and have a mould made for you.

Guys,
the mold is my design off of Mountain Molds. It is a 90% meplat design at 800grns. I like this sight as you can see your design in real time.

Which size mold did you order? Did Dan cut you a single cavity in in his double cavity blocks? Aluminum or Brass?

You're welcome Matt
Ralf---it is an aluminum single cavity. Casts great.
I've had Dan make me several designs in various calibers of the years. One thing I have found is large-caliber "shorter-fatter" bullet designs work better in aluminum than long-slender calibers. As an example, I had Dan cut me a flat-nosed .375-350grn from ALM which is quite long & slender. It take rapid/hot pouring to keep the mold filling out right. These 600-1000 grn 600's fill out easy.

I also suggest you guys cast your bullets from Linitype, at .621. I have a similar mold I made myself and the .600OK works really well with Linotype over 2500fps.-Rob

Rob, .630 really? I have been doing well with .622 but am willing to try anything. Does the linotype shrink more than wheelweights?

Rob's probably got a good point. I made mine to plink with for a 60JDJ #1 single shot @ around 1500. If you plan on driving it hard (2000><Wink I'D go Rob's route.
Straight WW's at 1500---very accurate & HARD HITTING Wink

OOPS- Had a brain Fart. Not .630 but .621. I've been fooling with some brass bullets in .430 for a Desert Eagle and messed up!

NEI Handtools has a nice, ready to go mould for a 900-grainer in .622" cal:

Steve Brooks will make one the way you want it.
Brooks True-Bore Moulds.
Here is my .616"/940-ish-grain. It will work in true 20-gauge bores.
Steve knows what you need, just ask.

Nice mould RIP, did you design that one? It looks like it would feed well from a magazine box.
Did you work off of the premise that a heavier cast bullet will shoot about the same speed before pressure rears its' ugly head as a lighter one?

Thanks for sharing,

Rich

Rich,
I started by submitting a design at the Brooks Tru-Bore site and Steve emailed back saying he had done something like that before.

So I just turned him loose and asked for something that would be .616" diameter,
and weigh over 900 grains in his preferred 30:1 alloy,
with flat&square base,
with truncated cone FN nose,
and whatever band, groove, meplat size, and nose cone angle
that Steve Brooks thought was pretty. Wink

Yep, looks like a good one. tu2

He mailed the mould to me with two sample slugs he cast in 30:1.
Weights were 956.0 grains and 957.0 grains, average weight = 956.5 grins Big Grin

base and band O.D. = 0.616"
bullet/slug length = 1.345"
meplat diameter = roughly 0.400"

If I cast in Linotype alloy, it will probably be a perfect .620" diameter and exactly 900 grains weight. Cool

About the weight of slug:
Nothing more sinister than wanting to have the ability to beat the 600 NE 3",
with the .615 NE 3.5" (20 Gauge Hellboy) ... BOOM
