To save you some time in your endeavor…check out Michael’s work with various bullets in his 45-70 rifles: http://www.b-mriflesandcartrid...45-70-Terminals.html Jim "Life's hard; it's harder if you're stupid" John Wayne

Thanks, I have read it before, excellent work. I am focusing on the 500 gr. solid as used by Buffalo Bore and Garrett's.

I shoot a 460 hard cast lee bullet in my No. 3 at 1400fps. Wouldn't want it much faster due to the light weight of the rifle. It has no trouble shooting thru hundreds of lbs of pig. If I were going after dangerous game I would use something with a bit more vel. like my 416.

My son shot his #3 with the 500gr Hornady at 2000 fps! I shoot my #1 (long-throated) at 2200 fps! Killed a bear with that load! However, a 465 hardcast at 1900 fps from a NEF .45-70 single-shot flattened a trophy bear at 70 yds. Yeah, a heavy 450 to 500gr hardcast at 1400 will plow through most anything, but will leave mostly at .458" hole. At velocities over 1800, however, from a 465gr (or whatever)with a flat meplat???? Look for something like a bomb going off inside the creature while still making an exit! Several years ago, Brian Pierce published an article in Rifle magazine where he took two cape buffs, with one shot, using Cor-Bon 500gn flat nose solids from Marlin 1895. Matt FISH!! I am going to bump up the charge of H322 from 42.0 to 44.0 in .5 increments. At 41.0 I was getting 1480 FPS with airspace still in the case and no signs of pressure problems. It helps that the 1886 is a very strong design for a lever action, when I compare them to my 92's, 94's, 95's and Guide guns these rifles are huge.

The bullets used by Brian Pierce in his article may have been Garrent's rather than Cor-Bon, I can't clearly recall. Matt FISH!! There are three bullets you might like to try in your 45-70. Take a look at the Woodleigh 400 grain Hydro. I shoot them in my 450 Marlin. Great bullets but quite long. In order to avoid too much compression, I switched to Accurate 1680. The second is the 400 grain CEB #13. Fantastic solid. Finally, don't overlook the Barnes Buster. I think it is a heck of a bullet especially for plains game and anything in North America. If you are interested in 350 grain bullets, I would take a hard look at the North Fork solids and cup point solids. They will do anything you need to do with a 45-70. With some of the newer lighter solids available why use a 500 grain in the 45-70. You can see in Michael458s work with the 45-70 that the better designed 300 to 350 grain solids out penetrate all others. With the lighter bullets you get more velocity, trauma, lighter recoil and flatter trajectory. Its a no brainer. The reason I always used heavier bullets in the 45-70 was for better penetration but now with the availability of really good light bullets I see no need for the heavies. I personally saw at Michael's range how the light flat nosed solids out of my 45-70 double rifle out penetrated even my 577 Nitro with the old round nose steel jacketed solids. Sam

Original post: I know, but what the hell. I just wanted to do it. Thought I would try to duplicate the "Dangerous Game" solid load by a couple of companies. Did not concider it until I saw the absurd prices that were being charged for thier rounds. Thought I woild put this here in case anyone missed it. Loaded 43.0,44.0,45.0,46.0 grs. of H322. Will be testing next weekend. 45.0 and 46.0 grs. showed light compression.
