Do you think the guy who designed the action might have been a bit leery about a 'normal' action staying closed after firing a .577NE?

Jeffe, let me share some of my vast knowledge of twice barreled firearms with you.
.
What you are calling "ugly" about this lovely piece is actually the SAFETY. All one must do to render the gun perfectly harmless is run a 3/8" x 3" stove bolt thru both ears as clearly shown in this photo.

.

Once the bolt is in place, the action can not be closed or the gun fired.

Think of it as an early version of our modern day "trigger safetys."

You're welcome

I kind of like it. And at only $20K, it is reasonably cheap for an imported double. And besides, you can use those two crossbolt holes to triangulate compass readings.

Jeffeosso,

Personally, I like it. If for no other reason than it is different, and I'd wager stronger than a brick shit house!

Pecos,
I think you are pretty close... except this is the remington double prototype and the "stovebolt" holes are actually for the safety locks, to make it hunter proof!!

Billy,
you know, i've taken crawfish hole .318 bore 8mm barrels, that are so rusted you couldn't cut them down and rethread for a small ring...

so, yeah, if given.. but i doubt i'ld pay shipping!!

Most folks would think a Pontiac Trans Am looks better than a Rolls Royce..

If I had the $$$, I think I'd take the Rolls..

There's lots of things that I might have if discretionary funds permitted. But that would be FAR down the list.

1. It's oggly. Might not be taken home even at closing time in a bar that sold hard liquor.

2. Anybody besides me see a gap in the wood-to-metal fit that would not be acceptable on a $500 rifle? You're going to spend more to restock it before you want to be seen with it in public, and then it is not original. Is that gap supposed to be there to prevent splitting?

What a small world, I have actually handled that exact rifle.
It is well made, but typical over engineered Teutonic precision.

No underbolting. It has one less fastener than a standard A&D/Greener-third-fastener boxlock like the Merkel.

The barrel extensions on either side also block access to the extracted cartridge somewhat. At least encumbers access a bit and could slow things down, especially if extraction was the least bit sticky.

Slow and ugly and not as strong as it looks. Bad design.

Yeah, I do not dig this one. Too long in the sides would give a false sense of security... I see a fast reload with one round going in the chamber and one dropping by my feet. I dont like wide a$$es on my women eather.
