I've been out of the Winchester game for years but I had 4 .405s in the 1980s. I used 57 grains of 3031 with a 300-grain bullet. If you need stuff, I have dies, shell holder and 20 new brass cases for sale for $50 plus postage. Good shooting. I'm into double rifles now but the .405 will always have a place in my heart. That is the same load I used with both 300gr Woodleighs and TSX's. Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

I use 54 gr of IMR 3031 with the Hornady 300gr FP, and 54.5gr with the North Fork Soft. Both of these loads hit the same place at 100 yards as the 300gr Hornady FP DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I made this load from scratch. Its 41 mag bullets 210 gr Nosler Hp with 50 grs of aa1680 powder .It blows stuff to pices like milk jugs.I have shot it over 100 times so far.I was wondering if anybody had loaded the 400 gr bullets in the 405.I know its only 2000 fps but a good up close load. Its so fun to shoot this gun with a limbsaver pad on it.I hope to shoot a black bear this fall with the 300 gr bullets.I am getting use to open sites again. This aa1680 powder works good.I found some R-15 loads from barnes 57 grs of R15 with 300 gr bullets.I have lots of aa1680 and Reloader 15 powder thats why I like them so much.Who makes .411 bullets any more?

Google search result. I am not trying to be a "smart alec", it's just that we often forget to use this great facility. James "Growing old is not for sissies"

RL #7 is my powder of choice especially for heavier bullets. I'm shooting 360gr North Forks and 400gr. Woodleighs for DG. 210gr. Sierra pistol bullets for plinking work fine. Do some research on powders, 3031 is an old standby but I get better results out of RL#7. Good shooting with "Old Teddy"

I would be very careful using Rel7 and 400gr pills in the 405 Win. Bad bad things can easily happen there! 3031 is a bit more difficult to get yourself into trouble with. By the way, you won't be able to crimp in the cannelure of the 400gr Woodleighs using 405 Win brass at even minimum trim length. The Woodleighs will engage the rifling at a COL of around 3.17". I don't know about the 0.410" Hornady's though.

57grs IMR-3031 with 300gr bullets... have you Chrony'd those? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've also got a M-1895 in .405Win. I checked my data: 53.5grs H4895 with 300gr Hornady FN and I Chrony'd that load @ 2225fps MV

Demonical, I am not 458Win, but in my 405 M1895 the load in question, 57gr of IMR3031 and a 300gr Woodleigh, had a muzzle velocity of 2310 fps. Hornady brass, and CCI200 primers.

I am going to try the reloader 15 loads Barnes gave me.They said reloader 15 was the most accurate powder they tried.I am working up loads for aa1680 also.I have had good luck with it in straight cases .What is the pressure limit in the 405 win in the Winchester 1895 ?How can you tell pressure but the lever?

DGR416, Theoretically the M1895 should be able handle 270Win MAP which is 62 ksi. I know the Hornady 405 brass can handle this level of pressure without issue. The scary thing about the M1895 is the over pressure failure mode is a primer which has blown out the primer indentation. In other words, since the rifle has a rebounding hammer there is nothing supporting the primer at the firing pin indentation and when the pressure gets too high this area of the primer plastically flows into the firing pin hole in the breech block and eventually gives way. The high pressure in the case / barrel then escapes down the firing pin bore in the breech block and directly into the shooter's face (more specifically the shooter's eye). Moral of the story is do NOT overload a M1895. So the wise course of action is to leave the 405 Win loaded to it's historic levels and do not hot rod it as the rifle, M1895, has a piss poor gas escape route.

ScottS, amen to that! I do not trust any levergun with hot loads; I trust the Chrony. When I reach max listed velocities, I use that or maybe back off a grain or 2. I'm satisfied when the Chrony is giving consistent repeatable loads, at sensible velocities. FWIW, I tried a load with H335 52.5grs and achieved 2300fps, but the speeds with the H4895 were more consistent, so I am going to stick with it. Last thing I want to do is blow up my beautiful .405Win!!
