Questions About Double Rifle Actions Login/Join

I conceived these questions after reading a post from Alf.

1.) If both both Purdey underbolts are properly fitted (bearing evenly on their respective bites) what percentage of the total force acting upon the action is carried by each bolt?

2.) Which component is subjected to the greatest stress, hinge pin, bite race, or bolting? Also why?

3.) What effect, if any, does hardening the action have?

4.) Is the stiffness of the action effected by hardening of said action? And why?

5.) Which carries more load and why? A Purdey underbolt or a Greener style cross bolt, assuming they are properly fitted.

6.) When regulating a double rifle how is the Thermal Expansion of the barrels compensated for?

7.) Does it really matter which barrels is fired first on a properly regulated double rifle?

8.) How does opinion effect the correctness of any of these questions?

Todd E,
I had my engineering physics, statics and dynamics courses more than 25 years ago. It would be quite laborious for me to do this homework assignment. Why don't you be a good chap and do the calculations for us? Please be honest and cut the human behavioral research out of the equations. We can accept you as a PhD mechanical engineer if you say so.

Alf,
Thanks for the details on the Jeffery doubles. This has me wondering why the 600 NE's had only one bite underbolting? You are blessed to have those old catalogs on the old doubles.

ALF, I also have a reprint of the Jeffery catalog, very informative, quite a story with those lions, he used soft nose ammo ( in a .600 !). Reprints of this catalog and others is available from www.gunshop.com/galazan.htm or Kynamco in England.

Pondoro and Alf.
Thanks much for the link and other responses.
I will order those Eley/Kynoch/Jeffery catalogs and guides. Thankfully, my book shelves already groan with many of the books they offer, so I will get off cheap on this great little discovery.

Does anyone know the answers to these questions? I thought they were kinda interesting, but I admit to knowing nothing about such things. Alf started to answer some of them. Were is Todd E anyway? He usually only posts stuff like this so he can give us all the answers and prove how smart he is.

CASEY,
The above statement is the exact reason nobody is answering these questions! These are straw man questions, That mostly need mathematical equations, to answer properly. We all know the answers,in general terms, to these questions, but not in the precice way the answers are asked for! Knowing something doesn't always mean you can relate that knowledge mathematicly! So, IMO, to avoid a no win sittuation, most will not reply! Too bad discussions like this one have to become a contest, designed to down others. Much information could be gleaned from this string, but for the competetive nature under which it is presented!

Mac, since Todd E has kept his mouth shut maybe he isn't going to answer. You seem to have at least some idea of the answers and I would appreciate it if you would share that knowledge with me. I guess I am asking you to reconsider your silence.

500 grains,
The double barreled bolt action made in Austria is the Szecsei-Fuchs Double Bolt, designed by a Canadian inventor, Josef Szecsei and built in Austria by Fuchs - the website is www.jagdwaffe.com
I had the opportunity to write to Mr Szecsei several years ago when he patented his actions kind courtesy Mr Holt Bodinson of Gun Digest who graciously put me in touch with him. Szecsei had patented several versions of his action, but only two are in production, a side by side in calibers upto .500 Jeffery and an over and under in .700 Nitro. I had posted a query on this forum asking if anyone had any info on these guns but no one seems to have had any. Yes, the design is a push feed with spring loaded Sako type ejectors and being a bolt action, it must definitely be considerably stronger than the old break open doubles. On the minus side, it has extra length and weight and I don't have any info from anyone other than Messrs Szecsei and Bodinson, both of whom are very friendly and always ready to talk to anyone about these guns. Does anyone have any independent info?
