Now let's not equate rational conclusion with prejudice. Cool The 404J is obviously better from the point of view of the vehicle you need to launch the bullet: standard action with "normal" bolt throw length and faster reloads, more capacity in the magazine, less powder for quasi-identical real world results on animals, etc.

Wink is correct Wink...both the Rigby and Jeffery are great rounds. I have owned and loaded for both, sold the Rigby built a 404. Both are capable of sending 400 grain bullets down range at 2500+ fps. Yes, the Rigby is capable of about 100+/- fps more velocity, but who needs 2700 fps out of a .416 with 400 grain bullets....

All correct. However, Pierre tries to argue that there is some magical difference because of the 404s somewhat larger bullet diameter. That seems a little silly to me. Anyway, the Rigby is just "cooler". Cool

For anybody who loves rifle books Boddington, Taylor, Pierre s, Greg Woods, Don Heaths articles, and Brian Litz on ballistics are great sources. Kevin robertsons africas most dangerous also has a good section. I have all of them and often go back to the opinions.

I absolutely am glad I ponied up for a hard copy signed by Pierre.

I think he may have been inclined to like 404s better since he grew up seeing them in the hands of so many parks and recreation folks.

I've got a 416 Rigby and two 404 Jeffery rifles, and everybody knows the 404J is way cooler than any other bolt action caliber beginning with a 4. Smiler And by the way, some people make a big deal of the difference between a 9.3 and a 375 H&H, even going to the length of enacting laws saying one is OK for dangerous game and one is not. How much difference in caliber between those two?

I for one believe in all kinds of magic when it comes to my 404s.
