Does anyone have any experience with 480 grain, .458 bullets in a .458 Winchester magnum. Your experiences (good and bad) would be most helpful.

Walter

The Crimp groove on a 480 Woodleigh is not in the right place for a 458 Win Mag...

It is in the right place on their 500gr bullets.

Per "Woodleigh" in a phone conversation I had with them, the 500gr and 480 gr .458 are constructed the same.

The 480 gr Woodleigh Softs and Solids, have worked Perfect for me in my 450 No2...

I'm 99% sure there's a new 480gr with correct crimping groove for the 458WinMag.
Cheers...

PS: Just checked ... Woodleigh updated their website this week. The new 480s are listed. The Weldcores are new for their crimp groove ... the other 480's are the monolithics.

I've shot the 550gr bullet out of my 458 Lott.As far as the 480 witch I've never heard of it.I'm sure it will work. All of my loads are Not crimped for my 458 Lott. They are very tight but not crimped.

Yes, there are. GWHJACK on this site has shot the 480 grain Woodleigh (with correct 458WM crimp) through his 458 WM. Believe he was using AA2230. He was getting over 2,150 FPS and still had room in the case for more powder.

Hopefully he will see this thread and jump in.

I don't crimp any of my big bore handloads. The 480 gr Woodleigh sounds like a great solution for the .458 Winchester case capacity issue.

Thanks Shumba!

I ordered some 480gr Woodleigh softs and solids with the 458 Win Mag cannelure on them. This will allow you to crimp in the proper place for the 458 and the bullet takes up less space in the case than a 500gr or the standard cannelured 450 Nitro bullet.

My load was 72grs of A2230 which is a non compressed load and would allow for a little more powder if you wanted. You can shake the loaded round and hear the powder.

This load gave me 2218fps out of 24 inch barrel on my H&H.

The A2230 is very heat stable and with the non compressed load it will be very dependable in the heat. This is what I was looking for so I stopped at 72grs.

Woodleigh makes a run of these bullets each year. I ordered the bullets with Fred at Huntington’s. Just ask for the 480gr Woodleigh’s with the 458 Win Mag cannelure.

Long live the 458 Win Mag!

I am looking at four boxes of the Woodleigh 458Win 480grn bullets at this moment.
I have them ready for my 458Win that is being built at present.
Have some loaded to set the sights with 70 to 75grns of Bench Mark 2 which is similar to AA2230.

Interesting observation ... BM2 is very close in burn rate to the old AR2206. Physical dimensions of the granules I believe are different. BM2 certainly got the 458AccRel to boogie with 400gr projectile when Short&Fat tested them.

I can feel an urge for another 458Win coming on after I finish my latest project.
Cheers...

This is good to know as I have plenty of AR2206 (H-335) also.
