Agree with you on 4320 but my experience is 10 years less than yours, so who knows, that 10 years might mean I need to revisit this posting

But I can tell you this. About 20 years ago we got a whole bunch of powder that was pulled from 30/06 military. It was all in one very large container and was made up of what looked like and behaved as Win 760 and 4320. We separated with a sieve.

What we called "4320" gave the highest velocities I have ever seem from a 270 with 110 grain Sierras and 110 grain Hornadys.

Was it the Improved Military Rifle 4320, I don't know. Maybe it was the "Unimproved"

How might it "look like" both a ball and an extruded powder? Also, burnrates are quite different, with 4320 a touch slower than IMR-4895 and W-760 about on a par with IMR-4350. You'll probably never really know what it was. Many factory powders look much like cannisters powers but there always seems to be a shade of doubt, due to color variation or hue.

It looked like 4320 and 760 in terms of the two different powders.In other words "it looked like" a big container that was about half full of 4320 and about half full of 760.

As I posted, it might have been UMR 4320 rather than the "Improved"

i have load data right from hornady and they show
73.6 grns of imr 4320 as absolute max with there 500 grn fmj bullet in the 458 lott

ps i almost forgot

the highest velosity load from hornady is

86.6 grns of win 748 with WLRM primers 24" barrel
2250-2300 feet per second with both the 500 grn fmj and soft point interlock
