Has anyone tried Reloder 17 with the 416 Rigby or similar sized cartridge?
These big cartridges sometimes like the medium slow powders like the 4350 types.
I'd like to find some 2700fps (or more) loads for the 350 TSX.

I may need to load up some rounds in an area that doesn't allow much choice or room for experimenting. It would be nice to be in the ball park at the beginning.

Just chronographed a couple of test loads.

98 grain Reloder-17 in 416 Rigby, Norma cases,
fed215M Gold Medal primers, produced
2751 fps
and 100 grain of the same produced
2792 fps.
6000 ftlbs, reasonably good thump.

No high pressure signs, though the
primers were slightly fuller (less rounding)
than loads around 2600 fps. Bolt lift, and case head expansion were smooth and normal.

Pretty nice loads in a CZ action (=strong) for turning the Rigby into a relatively flat shooting, all-around rifle. 2" high at a 100, 8" low at 300, 24" low at 400, so pretty good out to about 350-375 yards.

Anyone else test some R-17 in the 416 Rigby?

416Tanzan,

Thanks for posting that info. It appears that Rel17 is only slightly faster than IMR4350 on a charge weight basis. I was getting similar velocities (2785fps) with 104gr of IMR4350 and 350gr Speers out of a 24" barrel. Again good info, thanks for sharing.

I've heard tantalizing rumors of Re 17 in the .375 H&H, too, but Alliant is pathetically slow in developing and releasing load data.

I have RL17 inked in between H414 and VV N160...can't remember where that info came from but it's NOT OFFICIAL FROM AA.

I emailed AA asking for any load data for the 375 H&H and 416 Taylor a couple weeks ago but haven't heard back.

I does have a slightly better bulk density than H4350 for sure.

I'm doing some load workup with my 9.3x62 and 375H&H but ran out of bullets....RL17 with Nosler 260 Parts and AccBonds are next on my todo list.

Luck

I ran some loads with the 570 gr TSX in my .500 A2 with reasonable success. I also did the same with 300 gr Hornadys in my .375; I made no attempt to push the envelope though.
