I agree, and I'd rather have the Whitworth than a push feed M-70. But if I really expected to face an angry brown bear up close, I'd rather have a 458, loaded with 400 or 450 grain soft points at about 2150fps.

I have been looking for a good big bore bolt gun. I can't decide between the 375 H&H or the 458 Win mag. There are more 375 loadings available and ammo is much cheaper than the 458, but the 458 holds the edge with stopping power. I have two rifle in particular that I have looked at one is a whitworth mauser in 375 H&H, the rifle is in 95% condition and price is 520, he might take less if I flashed some cash, the other rifle is a winchester model 70 458 win, its in 85-90% condition and he is asking $450. I could probably get it for $400, but it is a push feed and I have heard a lot of bad things about push feeds not being reliable. This gun will be used as backup for my buddy when he hunts Brown bear, and possibly for moose. I think the 375 would be more versatile. I already have a 35 whelen but would feel better with a little more gun if I had to go in the bush after a wounded bear. Thanks for the advice.

You can never go wrong with a 375 H&H, but you can feel empty and wanting a 458 lott or 416 after buying a 458 win.

Good Lord! The price on Whitworths is usually a couple of hundred over that. Buy, buy, buy! And if you're worried about facing a p.o.'d bruin, load up some 350 gr. Woodleigh softnose.

Get the Whitworth .375. I own one in .458WM and these are well made and nicely balanced guns. They are real steals for the price. The .375 H&H is about ideal for hunting the large bears. This caliber will stop the most determined bear charge with reasonable bullet placement. There is nothing wrong with push feeds. They just don't belong on a rifle where failure of a little spring could spell disaster.

Wouldn't reaming a 458 WinMag to 458 Lott be a simple matter, thereby solving the dilemma?
