Does anyone know the difference between these two actions in a Sako chambered for .375 H&H?

I beleive the AV action is longer overall. I've never heard of an AIV chambered in .375H&H from the factory; my Sako 7mmSTW, .338WinMag, and .375H&H were all AVs.

George,
I value your opinion as I have seen your posts in the past. 2 questions -

1. I noticed that Champlin Arms, the double rifle guys in OK, have a Sako Safari Grade in a .375 for sale but listed the action as a "AIV" action. I located another standard Sako in .375 that listed the action as "A V". I was unsure of the difference. I am not sure what to make of the differences as some people have stated that Sako changed the design of their actions over the past 10 years or so.

2. Did you use your .375 Sako on your buff hunt or for DG?

THanks,

Check with the folks at Champlin's; it may be a typo, it may be correct.

I don't have any of my reference materials here, but IIRC, the AV actios were for .375H&H-length rounds, the AIV for short magnums, the AIII for .30-06 length, AII was for .243-length, and the AI was for .223-length and smaller.

I used my Sako .375 only on PG. I hunt DG with a CRF.

I had a Safari Grade (quarter rib, dropped magazine) in 300 Win Mag that was marked AIV.

I had a .300 WM custom rifle made about 15 years ago that has the AV action. Apparently it works well for calibers less than .375. It's one of my favorite guns.

Dogcat- I have a SAKO model AIV in .375 H & H. It was built in 1989. I don't know the difference between it and the AV. The AIV has a claw extractor, maybe the AV does not? You might go to SAKO's website and email them, they are usually good about responding.

Tom- There not only WAS an AIV action but there still IS- although the AIV is no longer used for the .375 caliber. Only the AV action is used for the .375. The largest caliber the AIV comes in is 9.3 x 62 and 9.3 x 66.

the AIV was the deep magazine action for the Sako Safari, mine held five .375 H&H in the box and one in the chamber, very comforting in Botswana in 1988 had to shoot a buffalo 4x and while waiting to see if he would get up again it was a relief to know I still had two in the rifle. Later rebarreled to .300 H&H still held five plus one. Safaris in .338 and .300 Win only held four in the box because of less taper in the case.
