I bought a new Model 70 in .375 and I am very happy with it. I have, however, heard or read comments to the effect that the rifle is not ready for Africa. Two questions: What does it need done to it? Who can do it?

Replace the mag follower spring with a Rem 700 spring, they are available from Brownells. If you really want to do it up right send it to Mark Penrod and have him work it over. He'll replace the pins in the action with oversized and hardened pins he makes himself, time the safety, surface grind the sears and do a trigger job, and replace the follower spring and cheapie extractor all for around $150, at least that what he charged for the last one he did for me. It's money well spent.

See any need for slicking up the action or is well enough finished?

The SC production rifle I have is slick as snot, the nicest I have ever had straight from the factory, I don't think it could be any better, it's a .300 Win Mag Super Grade. The two .375s that Mark worked over for me, a Stainless Classic and a Safari Express, were both New Haven guns and not as nicely finished as this SC gun. Unfortunately, I haven't seen one of the SC big bores yet. Actually, scratch what I wrote about the surface grinding and trigger job since the new guns have a different trigger, I like it. I assume they can still benefit from the other mods he makes to them, though.

The new model 70 .375 H&H Safari Express comes in at 9 lbs and fitted with 2 cross bolts. They are certainly nice and better finished than the CZ equivalent (called Magnum Express) coming in at 10 lbs. Warrior
