OK Guys,

Can someone please summarize the differences between the .416 Taylor, .416 Remington, and the .416 Rigsby for me please.

Also, is the .416 Remington case the base for the .300, .338 and .375 RUM line of cartridges?

Thanks VERY much,

Mike,

The .416 Taylor is based on the 2.5" belted magnum case; brass is usually either .458 Win Mag necked down, or .338 Win Mag necked up. It's a little on the small side if your goal is the 2300-2400 fps traditional velocity of the .416 Rigby with a 400 grain bullet.

The .416 Remington is based on the full-length 2.85" belted magnum case. It's big enough to get full Rigby velocity without excess pressure.

The .416 Rigby is a unique case size, with a .590" head and a length of 2.90". It can do 2300-2400 fps with a 400 grain bullet at low pressure, or can be hot-rodded up to almost 416 Weatherby levels. The .416 Weatherby is basically a belted Rigby.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Joe

Mike,
I'll take a poke at it...
The Rigby is in a class by itself. Essentially, this is the parent brass for the 378/416/460 weatherby's, with a belt added. It's lower pressure, long, HUGE, and THE '16
Case length 2.902" water ~125gr
400 grains at 2400, lower pressure

The 416 weatherby is a rigby with a belt, round shoulder, and higer pressure.
case 2.912 water a tad more than 125
400gr at 2600 high pressure

416 remington is the 375 HH, by way of 8mm rem, improved. It's actually the 416 hoffman, btw.
case 2.85" water ~107, std mag case head
400 grains at 2400 high pressure

the 416 taylor is a 458 winchester (or 358 morma/308norma, 7rem, or 264 win) case necked to 416, with no other changes.
case 2.525, water ~92gr
400gr 2350, high pressure

and, for what it's worth
500/416 is a 500 nitro, necked down to 416, at LOW pressure 40k
case 3.30" water ~149
400gr at 2400

The RUM are based off the 404 Jeffery, as are the WSM,RSM, ans WSSM, rebated to standard mag heads.

And, for what it's worth, pressure is relative...

the 500/416 is 40k
416 rigby is 47k
416 weatherby is ~64k
416 taylor is ~64k
416 rem is 62.5K
458 lott is 62.5k, same as 458 win, and a HOST of others.

the RUM/WSM etc are at 65k.

Jeffe,

Thanks for the info ...

Leads to an interesting question: Anyone built a .416 wildcat on a .375 RUM case?

Sounds like it would have more case capacity that the .416 Remington but without the high cost of .416 Rigsby brass.

Thanks again All!

I agree with Jeff. Therefore get a Rigby if you have a long action. As far as I know Remington is the only source of brass for the 416 Rem, while you can easily make your own for the Taylor. I don't like Weatherbys so get somebody elses opinion on this thing.
