Does anyone have experience with Hill Country Rifles? I am considering building a 404 Jeffery. Hill Country Rifles uses a Dakota action for this caliber. I definitely like the Dakota action, but I don't really know much about Hill Country Rifles. If anyone has experience with this company, I would appreciate feedback.

I took my son's CZ 550 375H&H to them finish up this new rifle. Bedded action, recoil lug and slick up action, IIRC. He took it to TZ last year and had a successful safari. HCR folks worked quickly, priced fairly, and generally seemed to know what they were doing. My local gunsmith would not have done as well, IMO. Jack Hood DRSS

Re-barreled the wife's shot out .270 Wby before our 2007 family safari. Everything is as advertized and they are great guys. Their booth is next to GregR at HSC each year and it is always a pleasure to visit. Very personable. _______________________

A friend sent them a titanium Remington 700 that shot badly. In a short time it was returned and shot sub moa with factory ammo. I have heard nothing but good things about them!

Twice... I have had HCR build four rifles for me, the last a DGR in .404 Jeffrey. I used a Winchester Model 70 RUM action with Williams bottom metal I picked up in the AR classifieds with a 22" Pacnor barrel with NECG rear and front sights and a NECG barrel band swivel. Had them cerakote and drop it in a Mcmillan supergrade stock. Had them top it off with Talley bases and rings tapped to 8x40 and a Zeiss Conquest 2.5X8. Finish is excellent and accuracy is around an inch with Hornady factory ammo. Since I am not planning to use it for prairie dogs I think the accuracy is sub-minute of buffalo. I can't wait to test it on the real thing. I'd be happy to send you a couple of pix if you would like. All of my HCR rifles shoot great and are hell built for whatever mother nature can throw at them! On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died. we have used their accurazing services and they work fine. They just completed building a left hand 7x57 for my wife. We have been pleased to date.

I sent them my .300 Weatherby Mk5 Ultralightweight, the one with the 26" fluted barrel. They sent me back a target beating 1 MOA with 180 grain factory loads. I then killed eight animals with eight shots in 2006 with it. I have fired it three times since: 1st shot was a dead on sighter at 50 yards the evening before hunting in Zim. 2nd shot killed a Hippo by braining it. Third shot killed a croc (brain shot) at 100 yards. I think it's accurate and holds its zero. Indy Life is short. Hunt hard.

I've had several rifles they built come through my shop, and have a few friends that own rifles from them. Hill Country does very nice work, I'd not hesitate a second to send them one of my personal rifles for work. I doubt you'll hear much about them that is any less than very positive.

I have had Matt and his excellent staff work on probably 10 rifles over the past ten years and they are all excellent shooters. A+ recommendation BUT I have not had a rifle actually built out by them but would not hesitate if the right project comes along.

I have a 280 AI being built by them right now that I should be getting back in a couple weeks. I'll let you know how it works out. Political correctness offends me.

They have made a .300 Weatherby, .338 Ultra mag, a .375 H& H, a .416 Rem, a .404 Jeff and a .458 Lott. All of the guns were made on the McMillan safari stock template. They are made with the control round feed Win. 70 actions that are reworked. The barrels can be specked to Lilja, Kreiger etc, have NECG sights and a barrel band sling stud. The rifles are Cerakoted. All of my rifles will shoot under an inch with factory loads and well under an inch with hand loads. Their work has been excellent. I enjoy shooting their rifles and they appear to be functional to the max. Matt Bettersworth is a really nice guy and Mike Ulman is a top young stock maker. They have an informative website.

I have a 300RUM built by them.. I really like all the HCR guns Ive handled.. And have enjoyed mine. No big bore expirence with them, but I would suspect quailty to be the same.
