7mm Mag conversion to a 416?

Riodot7mm Mag conversion to a 416?
I put this on gunsmithing too but I think it fits better here.
There are many used 7mm Mags available in my area.
I was told that converting a 7mm to a big bore 416 was possible - even simple.
It this true? Which 416 calibers?
Which actions are good? Which Actions should be avoided?
Will a 416 Rem. fit? Is the 416 Taylor a better option ?
This may be a weird request but I would enjoy this type of project.
Thanks in advance.

jeffeossoplease do a search on this forum, for a pretty thorough discussion on some of that.
my presonal preference is the 416 taylor on a 7 rem.. it's a rebarrel and feedramp... sure, it's not a "factory" round, but you can buy loaded ammo, head stamped brass, reloading dies, and all for about the same price as 416 rem and far less than the 404 jeffe.
or, you can think about the 470 AR

SnowwolfeI guess a lot has to do with what action are you considering to do the conversion on?
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Any suggestions?
I've seen 7mm in rem, ruger, mauser, & win

SnowwolfeI am not an expert in this area but I would guess as long as you used a long action with the mag bolt face it would be an easy conversion. I would pick the action you have the most confidence in.

lawndartI have a stainless Ruger in .338 Win Mag that cost less than $400.00 new when they had a sale at our local Sportsman's Warehouse two years ago. I have toyed with making that into a Taylor some day.
Basically, any Ruger, Remington, Winchester or Browning in 7mm Rem Mag would work just fine. Just hit the used gun racks and pick one that seems to have a decent action and trigger (make sure the scope mounting holes are lined up!). It would work great up north. If you build it on a slightly older Ruger with a "canoe paddle" snthetic stock, I would like to watch you torch off three full house rounds in rapid succession.

WillI wanted a Taylor so bought a CZ 550 in 7mm Rem. Mag. Had it rebarreled, and that's it. No ramp mods or anything else. It feeds perfectly, just as I suspected it should.
My crowningly best idea, ever!

tiggertateFor a Taylor I would use any of the above. With a Winchester I think you can go 416 Rem with a barrel, mag box and follower change if you prefer that cartridge. The others would require considerable gunsmithing to go to Rem Mag.
Another easy 416 Rem Mag action would be a SAKO L61R or later variant.

RiodotThis might sound nuts but I've seen alot of Savage 7mm Mags around here.
Any feedback?
I have 2 Savages that I use and trust now.(as well as other make bolt actions)
Or should I just keep with CRF actions.

tiggertateI think Midway has Savage/Adams & Bennet barrels ready to go in 416 Taylor. All you need is a wrench and headspace gauge (and a Savage, of course

).

bwanajcjthe only problem with a savage rebarrel, is after your done you still have a savage.

AtkinsonAny decent gunsmith can convert most any good bolt gun to a 416 Rem. its not even a difficult job....open them up in back...
All my 416s, 375s, 404, and recently a 10.75x68 have been on FN, Mod 98 Mausers, and a few pre 64 M-70 Win. actions.....The only problematic conversion is the 404 as it requires a special sized box and a bit more work....or use a M-70 classic and be done with it...

Paul HRay,
It comes down to cost for what you get. When one can get a CZ-550 416 for ~$800, it doesn't make sense to do any magazine work on a nominal std length action to accept the 416 rem. If one can pick up a used 7 mag for say $250, and get a barrel put on for say $350, then it makes sense to build a 416 Taylor. If you're going to spend any more than that, you might as well just get the CZ.

Hey Will,
Is the CZ in 7mm Rem mag built on a standard length 550 action or the Magnum length 550 Safari action?
Thanks,
lawndart

WillI think CZ calls it a medium length, which is just the regular 550 opened up a bit. It has the same bolt handle, etc, as the 550 (not the magnum).
