RSM 375 H&H to 378 Weatherby
Has anyone done this conversion on a magnum mauser action? I'm thinking about converting a Ruger Safari Magnum.

Thanks Brad Smiler

I think you will need the 416 Rigby action, I believe the 378 wby is bigger than the 375 H&H by quite a bit.

Sell the Ruger and buy a proper MKV in .378 - it's a muuuuuuch better gun.

Having a MkV and an RSM, I can say the RSM isn't all that bad. The mkV has the nod on feeding smoothly though. The RSM is so solid, if you run out of ammo, you could knock a critter out with it.

Another good option, buy a CZ 375 and rechamber, etc.
Get AHR to do it and get
their 3 position safety and trigger.
You'll then have a Safari ready rifle.

Agree - no problem with the Ruger Magnum but in .378 the Weatherby is far superior. Spend $1,500 more than the Ruger and get a slicked and trued Custom Shop .378 with the drop box.

Agreed, but if I were to deal with the blast and recoil, I think I would pick the 416 Wby. But then again, I've already been recoiled silly.

Macifej, we think too much alike, its scary. I'll go +1 on the 404, I wish more factory rifles chambered it. It is surprisingly effective for its level of recoil. It is the 7x57 of the big bore world.

I think I tried the 404 idea but there is too much metal gone in the 375 H&H chamber to go with the factory barrel and a 404. Also I want a little more recoil Please

I do think you would need to rebarrel. More recoil? You already have the 500J, quit screwing around and go 600OK! BOOM

It's easy... bolt face (50 buckes), get the rigby mag box, follower, spring (30 bucks), rechamber and feeding (250 MAX)

John, "rebarrel" a rsm? it is a intregal (dual) quarterrib barrel .. that's 2000 bucks and a year's wait

forget the 404 idea.. one would have to setback the barrel

Brad, it will work, and if people can make an enfield run a rigby, this one is easy

Dont forget you'll need a Rigby extractor and Feed ramp work (a lot of it) will also be necessary. If this costs $250 then you live in the land of Cheap gunsmiths. -Rob

zeros? NO WAY .. if it's double that, you are being ROBBED

more than $250 for a rechamber and feeding is not cool.. double that much is INSANE, unless there's a "real" name accosicated with the work

D'arcy does feeding for $100 bucks, if you can gethim to take the work. You guys are seriously overpaying..

NO WAIT ... its the kalifornicated gunsmiths that HAVE to overcharge.

Ain't no Gunsmiths in Kaliforniastan Jeffe ... Big Grin

If there were they wouldn't be workin' for $10 an hour like the boys in Texas.

You could not get a gunsmith here in NV or Ca to rechamber a .375 H&H to a .378 wby for less than $200. The Rigby box will need its ribs filed to fit the .378Wby, Feed ramp reground, extractor hook reshaped, rails opened, bolt face opened and re heat treated. follower smoothed. etc. If you get all that done and it feeds properly and shoots accurately and it costs you less than $500, I'd say thats a hell of a deal. At least out here it is. Frankly, I'd charge at least that if I did gunsmithing for others which I dont. Most decent smiths want $75/hr you know, about as much as my gardener.-Rob

50 bucks for opening a bolt face, swapping mag, follower, spring, and recahmbering taking 30 hours?

That's what you are saying, Jay .. 300 bucks for the work, which is VOER 100 bucks an hour for the work

If it takes more then 2 hours to open the boltface, remove the barrel, rechamber, and put together, then OF COURSE it will cost more.

here's a clue, guys .. liekteh CZ, the ruigby and HH cases use teh same rails .. just needs some feed work.

Dang, boys, that's robbery

.. The biggest problem I see is the barrel length ..mI thot the Ruger had a 23" barrel ... . Pretty short for trying to burn 110 grains of powder ....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

You mean this kind of work?

I was hoping to put together something a little more than my 375 H&H's. I just thought a 500 Jeffrey with a fast 375 would make a nice combo. The RSM's are so big and heavy that they tend to shoot pretty mild. I do have some who did the work on the 500 Jeffrey and would commission another RSM custom once I pay off my current bill. Not sure about the 23" barrel. I'll have to run Quick Load and check it out.

Thanks for all the input.

Macifej- I live in the F===ing DESERT! What is grass? Bushes, you must mean Cactus right? Yup I got a whole Desert for you. Its 99 degress right now so how soon you wanna start cause its gonna get to 112 today?
Jeffe- If he starts with a .375 H&H RSM its gonna take way more rail work. Heck just set-up time to do a boltface is 1 hr, then since its case hardened you have to re case it. Rechamber set up to finish at least 1.5 hrs unless he uses a drill press! In any event, lets see what cost quotes he gets on this project. No use any of us guessing.-Rob
