.458 Win Mag or Lott in H&R 1871? Login/Join

Ok, so as most of you know, H&R firearms have interchangable barrels...they offer a 450 Marlin barrel for their Ultra Line of rifles. If I were so inclined to get the 450 barrel, (which I am), is it concievable that I could rechamber it to a .458 Win mag or .458 Lott? Or are the pressures too high in those cartridges?

444, the 450 Marlin cartridge has a far different belt design then the 458 Win Mag, or the Lott, which is built on the same basic case. If this was a bolt action, one could screw the barrel out, and set it back, and re-chamber. The break action of the H&R does not allow this. IMO, the 458 WM or the 458 Lott are a little much for the H&R actionm, anyway! Stranger things have been done, however! [Cool]

Thanks guys, appreciate the info....while disheartening, at least I finally know [Frown] I guess there's no going around the fact that I need to buy a CZ550 .458 and rechamber....oh well [Wink] Thanks again for the replies.

Jumping on the same bandwagon, I have heard anecdotal reports that hot 45-70 action may be 'stretching' [pun intended] things with these guns.

That last post should say "hot 45-70 ammo" but for some reason I can't edit.

444, if you want a single shot 458 LOTT, why not re-chamber a Ruger No1 H 458 Win Mag? The CZ would be a more useful rifle, however! [Smile]

Well, Mac...actually I was just hoping I could get an easy ".458 something" [Wink] I don't necessarily want a single shot, but I was just brainstorming one day and was wondering if it was concievable. A CZ is definitely on my "to buy" list.

If you had to have a single shot the ruger #1 would be the way to go. However I agree with the cz option for the Lott.
