I have heard of some using the A-Max with OK results. Of course, there is always the Barnes X bullets and Woodleigh bullets, they work even if they do look a little funny on the .50 BMG. "The Hunting Shack" is loading the A-Max I think in their hunting ammo, but I won't swear to it.
I have some 50 BMG, 700 grain, copper jacket, lead core bullets with hollow point. Very thick jacket. Don't know who made them, I am sure if you touched base with the "Very High Power" gents they could help you out. F.C.S.A (Fifty Caliber Shooting Association) has a web site, don't know the address.

I should think the Barnes XLC 570 grainer would handle anything, small or large game, as far as you could shoot it and still call it hunting rather than stunt shooting.
BTW, how heavy a "hunting rifle" are you willing to pack around all day?
The 500 A2 is a better hunting rifle in this bore.

MANY THANKS, WILL CHECK ON BARNES BULLETS, OUR IDEA WAS TO SIT ON A MOUNTAIN SIDE AND SIGHT IN ON ELK GAME TRAIL. MAYBE 600-800 YD SHOT. WILL ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF A-MAX IS LEGAL. JUST A LITTLE DAY DREAMIN DURING THE OFF SEASON. BROJ
broj, The 750 grain Hornady A-Max would be as legal as any bullet for hunting.
It is a lead cored, copper jacketed, aluminum tipped soft point, like a Nosler Ballistic Tip or a Remington Bronze Point, only bigger and tougher.
The jacket is very heavy and tough. I have sectioned a few.
The BC is about 1.050, while the XLC has a balistic coefficient of about half that.
For the kind of shot you are talking about, the wind deflection will be much less with the A-Max. It is definitely the best. You can easily dope out the drop and use a mil-dot reticle for hold over. Wind is harder to deal with. Go with the A-Max if you are serious, and if it is legal to use a 50 BMG for such purposes where you will be shooting. I would hate to see you wound one of those magnificent beasts.

I've used paper patched 650 gr pure soft lead bullets at 2550 fps on a few deer out to 400 yrds. The bullets were .508 and patched to .511. The effect is pretty dramatic! Honestly any .510 caliber hole in anything will do the trick! Just ask the recently departed in Iraq and Afganistan.-Rob
