I have an older Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby. I bought it around 1992 or 93?? I do not like the front at all. It is a very thin, and I find it a little difficult to pick up in low light.
Can anyone recommend a brand/type of replacement sight?
Thanks!!

How difficult is it getting the factory front sight off?

I ended up letting the 'smith, Roger Ferrell, change mine. It was pretty dang tight. Roger said they're sort of hit n miss. Some really tough, some no sweat.
I put the NECG on mine.

I "fooled" with mine for a little bit and it was harder than it looked so I gave up for now. I think you would need the factory front sight height to know what NECG height to order?

As for removing factory sight blade, you'll note that the detent/plunger is at the rear of the sight blade which makes it tough to push and tap at the same time. I used a cut off allen wrench/short end to depress pin, tap forward with wooden hammer handle, dowell rod, etc. and it will move out of the slot. Naturally gun is resting in rack/holder while doing this process. Use calipers to determine front sight height from bottom of base to top of blade and confer w/ NECG and they can guide you accordingly. They do a lot of them and seem to know what they are doing. Mind you replacement from NECG may be a bit tight and some carefull polishing of the bottom/edges of portion which is inserted may be called for. Also, once you have the blade out, suggest a thin layer of grease to aid in installation and possible removal in the future. Replaced all of mine using NECG.

Well there ya go!!! I tried various bent wire type things but they wouldnt hold.....and I have plenty of allen wrenches that would work....oh well, next time.
