Was this ever a factory offering?

Actually, has this recently been a factory offering? I've been talking to someone online who's local to me and claims to have one, but I cant find one listed in the current online Winchester catalogue.

Interesting. The owner doesn't seem to be much of a gun afficianado, as he described it as a "Winchester Model 70 Lever action in 45-70."

So this mystery rifle could be a Model 70 in 458, or a Winchester 1886 lever gun which was chambered in 45-70, or maybe it isn't even a Winchester.

Thanks anyways, I'll just have to go take a look at it and find out myself.

Crazyquick, if your friend has a Winchester mod 70 chambered for 45-70, it is someone's attempt at wasteing a mod 70 action!

The Mod 70 has never been offered from the factory so chambered, and as someone else said, I'd bet that is a feeding problem, pretending to be a rifle!

Personally, I think he is just blowing wind!

Me too. I'm about 100% sure it's not a modified gun. So that means he doesn't know what he has. Could be a good chance to pick up a big bore something, or a Model 70 for cheap.

I work part-time in a gun store, and we have a Model 70 in 470 Capstick. But no ammo yet. Anyone know anything about when the ammo is comming out?

Perhaps he is confusing the 45-70 with the new 450 Marlin. USRAC has offered a custom shop M70 short action chambered in 450 Marlin. However, as I think about it there may have been some special edition M70 in 45-70 once upon a time, but that would have been sometime ago.

There is a huge Winchester Model 70 collector in Oklahoma that has one of if not the only Model 70 ever chambered in a 45-70. It was in a special Winchester Model 70 magazine that I have floating around here somewhere. I'll try to find it and post a picture.

I believe this fellow was a pilot and so was his wife.

Crazy, your friend said a LEVER ACTION? model 70, sounds like he is just useing the model number as a generic term for the winchester, bet its an 86 actioned rifle, either new or old, The winchester Hotchkisk[sp?],built about the mid to late 1800's
